Re-Subnetting: How To Questions

Question

Tuesday, November 19, 2019 2:56 PM

Hello,

I am currently setting up a plan to resubnet our network, we have Windows Server 2016. We are a smaller company with only a few switches and a single firewall and currently have a /24 and would like to move to a /22. My knowledge on networking is limited so I would appreciate any help I can get. When approaching this task where would be the best place to start? The firewall/switches and then the server and finally the work stations or?

Is there any automation that would help make this easier? Group policy ect?

If more information is needed to assess I can provide as needed.

Thanks in advance

-daniel

Hi daniel,

Changing the subnet mask requires that all routers and other statically assigned computers be reconfigured and all DHCP clients have renewed their lease obtaining the new parameters.

Additionally, the entire DHCP scope or scopes must first be deleted and then re-created using the new subnet mask.

Here is an article talking about Resubnetting, you could have a look:

Increasing the number of IP addresses on a subnet in DHCP Server

Thanks for your response, I had reviewed that article before coming here and though it is a good source of information it does NOT answer my question as to WHERE I start this process. Do I modify the firewall/routers first and then move to the DHCP server and additional servers/workstations?

Thanks

Hi ,

>> Do I modify the firewall/routers first and then move to the DHCP server and additional servers/workstations?

Based on my experience, this order should be right.

So if I do it this way I will not lock myself out of the machines since the network/firewall has been changed. I was hoping I would get more DETAILED instructions on "how to" from this forum, you just seem to be re-iterating what I am saying which has NOT been helpful. Is there anyone else willing to help with a little more depth and knowledge on their answer available for assistance?
