Question
Monday, September 16, 2019 9:08 AM
We have recently deployed Windows 10 Pro 1903 OS. When we do windows updates in Workgroup by manually pointing the machines to WSUS the updates get installed. When we join the system to domain and GP is applied, the Windows update fails saying Undoing changes. The machine boot up and we can logon fine. When we check in Update history the update have an error code as 0x80070005.
Not sure what exactly in GP is blocking. Anyone can suggest some solution?
Thanks & Regards

Hi,
The error code 0x80070005 indicates that the system user doesn’t have the required permission, or the system update is missing some critical files that are required for installing the update. This may also indicate an underlying issue with your hard drive such as a bad sector which corrupts the system or update files downloaded and saved on your storage media. Try the following steps:
Step 1: Backup your Critical Files Immediately;
Step 2: Recover Files Lost Due to the Error;
Step 3: Check the Disk Space: Windows update requires adequate storage space to apply the update successfully;
Step 4: Use Windows Updates Troubleshooter:
Step 5: Run SFC (Open the command and type sfc/scannow );
Step 6: Scan for Virus and Malware;
Final Step: Reset Windows Installation:
This option can surely fix the error code 0x80070005. So before following the below steps, backup if you haven’t already!
- Press Windows + X and click ‘Settings’, and then Click ‘Update & Security.’
- Under ‘Reset This PC’ click ‘Get Started’ button and follow the Windows PC Reset on-screen instructions.
In case you still face a problem, reinstall Windows using the Windows installation disc.
Besides, refer to the following link:

Hi,
The update happens fine when the machine is not in domain. But when we join the system to domain and apply a lockdown GPO it starts giving issues. sfc /scannow does mention corrupt files and it says it cannot repair some of them. I am not getting if there is anything else to be done in GPO for Windows 10 Pro 1903. I am trying to update using local administrator account. Any specific permissions to be done for Windows update to work? If it is not happening when it was in workgroup also then we can conclude an issue with the Windows OS corruption or some hardware issue. There is no issue with the space. Anything else to be done?

Hi,
You can use the following command in the CMD to capture the log:
Get-WindowsUpdateLog
And after the log generated, you can see if the log has any specific information.
More details you can refer to the following link:

The issue still persist. I am not getting the reason in the Get-WindowsUpdateLog output. I have tried declining the .Net Framework updates to ensure only the cimulative windows update gets installed but still it does not work.
Here is the Get-WindowsUpdateLog output.

Hi,
Sorry for the reply delays. From the log we can see the error:

Hi KiKi,
The issue is not resolved. I followed those registrations methods in the links provided but no luck. We have built the machine freshly using ISO downloaded using media creator tool. As long as the newly built machine is in workgroup, the patches install fine from WSUS but when the same machine joins domain and group policy applies it starts giving problem. No sure what is holding up.
Thanks.

The issue is not with WSUS. Client systems running with Windows 10 Pro 1903 version are able to get updates from WSUS. patches do download to client systems fine, the patches installs and prompt for reboot. During the reboot the system crashes, else normally it will show % percentage but in this case it reboots and while booting up the system shows the message as Could't complete the updates, undoing changes like that. So it looks to be an issue with the system which is applied with group policy.

Hi,
"the patches install fine from WSUS but when the same machine joins domain and group policy applies it starts giving problem."
For your problem, contact your dc admin for help, their GPOs influence clients' update and type gpresult command on problematic client to check which policies have been applied.
Best regards,
Kiki Shi
