Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 versions

Question

Thursday, December 29, 2011 6:51 AM

i am not sure what to make of this, but when i installed the default installation of vs2010 pro 32-bit, it installed two line items in "Programs and Features" for visual c++,

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.4974

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.6161

but when i unistalled these two entries and then reinstalled Visuall C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 using the downloadable package (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=29) and its sp1, i ended up with,

Visual C++ 2008 Redistiributable x86 - 9.0.21022

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.6161

this is curios and would like to know what version is the correct, latest, and greatest version for visual studio 2010 to work properly.  This install is a clean build of win7 pro x64 and only version of visual studio on the laptop.

windows update comes back with no additional updates required.

I hate to suggest this, but I'm going to. Try uninstalling VS 2010 completely and re-install it again?

well, i uninstalled visual studio 2010 and the two visual c++ 2008 redistributable x86 components manually using Programs and Features.  the reinstall is complete with all its sp and security updates.  i am now left with the original vc++ components that i started with:

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.4974

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.6161

it looks like the first entry installed is vc++, and the second entry is the vc++ sp1.

i still do not know why the vc++ package on the microsoft download page does not use these versions, but at least things seem to be working for me now.

Hi Usphilos,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Please do not worry about the version. Visual C++ Redistributable have many version which are listed in Control Panel together. There is no a correct version. Every version has its assemblies which probably are used by different applications or software. In my opinion, I recommend you do not worry about this.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know.

if these numbers are not version numbers, then how do i verify that the correct, latest, and greatest version is installed for visual studio 2010.

I've got the following versions installed on my system.

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.21022

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.17

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.4148

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.4974

Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.6161

The latest version should be 9.0.30729.6161, but I wouldn't worry about the other older versions that are before 9.0.30729.6161 like Alex has mentioned.

ok good, so 9.0.30729.6161 is the latest.  can i remove the other, seemingly older version (9.0.21022) listed in "Programs and Features"?

Hi Usphilos,

I recommend you do not move this version in Control Panel, which perhaps lead that some software stop running.

If you have any other concerns, please feel free to let me know.

thanks for the quick response.  i will leave the older version (9.0.21022) installed.  since the recommendation is to leave these older versions on my system, it looks like i now need to find the older version i removed at the very beginning of this thread.   do you know where I can find the version, Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 - 9.0.30729.4974, on the microsoft web site?  i am not sure which program installed this version.  it may have been visual studio 2010, but the install cd does not give me the option to selectively install this component.  i also see that both systemx and you, have this in your Visual C++ lists.

Please have a look at this link:  http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vcgeneral/thread/e2fc5068-61e3-4fd9-9c00-98543646de46

there are two files listed on the cd in the specified location:

vc_red.cab

vc_red.msi

when i click on the msi, it gives me the following error:

running setup does not give me an exact option to install the vc++ component i need, so i check the only option there referencing vc++.  after installing and rebooting, there is no change to the list of visual c++ components listed in Programs and Features.

running the setup again and choosing the repair option gives me the same result in Programs and Features.

Hi Usphilos,

You can also try to repair Visual Studio in Control Panel before you reinstall Visual Studio 2010 to check if it works or not.

I hope this helps.

Hi Alexander,

I have a similar issue with Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

Specifically the dynamic load library object named MSADO15.DLL, which is part of the MSVC++ 2008 redistributable package.

My laptop has been blue-screening the past 5 days whenever MSADO15.DLL is accessed.

My running environment is:

System Summary: OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate; Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600

Operating system: Windows Vista (partion 1) / Windows 7 (partion 2) / Windows Server 2008 (both); Architecture: 32-bit (x86); Browser: Internet Explorer 8 MSVC++ Version: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161

I don't run Microsoft C++ developer tools. I don't run any Microsoft developer tools.

Where can I download the previous version of MSADO15.DLL and/or Microsoft Visual C++ to reinstall ?

Why do I need the most current version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable ?

Is the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable version specifically for Windows 7 SP1 ?

Thank you so much Alexander for your help. Best, Ocotillo.

UPD 01/23/2012: Since no one responded, I have since uninstalled Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable without issue. None of the existing systems were affected by this event. No new systems have been effected. Thanks.
