Question
Tuesday, July 16, 2019 10:36 AM
Hello everyone,
I'd like to ask for help with an issue we have in our company.
Basically, since we implemented the 802.1x authentication, a large part of our company PC's are not connecting to the internet and every time in event viewer I find the following:
Evend ID 129 Time-Service
NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of discovery error. NtpClient will try again in 15 minutes and double the reattempt interval thereafter. The error was: The entry is not found. (0x800706E1)
In order to make it work, I have to disable the network adapter a few times.
The first time I disable/enable the network adapter, it ends with "failure to authenticate".
The second time it starts working and network connection is being established.
Don't know if it helps, but I noticed that, although the PC doesn't connect to the internet (skype for business and Outlook are also disconnected) the network adapter shows it's connected to the domain but it acquires via DHCP an IP from the old VLAN rather than an IP from the 802.1x VLAN.
Once I disable/enable the network adapter, after a few tries, it gets the 802.1x IP and the internet connectivity is established.
But if I restart the PC or shutdown/start, the issue reappears every time.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello,
Thank you for posting in this forum.
Are you using the wired connection? Or the wireless connection?
If you are using the wired connection, please check logs under this path: Event Viewer/Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/Wired-AutoConfig.
If you are using the wireless connection, please check logs under this path: Event Viewer/Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/WLAN-AutoConfig.
Best Regards,
Leon

Hello,
Are you using NPS for authentication? If so, what information is displayed in the log on the NPS?
Best Regards,
Leon

Hi Leon,
yes we're using NPS.
But no log is displayed during the failed attempts to connect to the network.
It's like they don't even get to NPS during the login attempt.
I can see all the other users in the NPS log but not the ones with the problem.
At that point I have to manually disable/enable the network adapter (two times) to establish a network connection.
No NPS logs during or after doing this either.

Hi,
Sorry to reply you so late.
Based on your current description, I recommend that you update your NIC driver. It seems that this issue is more relevant to your network adapter.
Best Regards,
Leon

That's the first thing we did, since we believe realtek cards are quite bad overall.
With Intel cards everything works fine.
But yeah, we still have the issue, even if we're using the latest drivers.

Will NPS server log some events when the network is successfully established?
What's the settings here?
Best Regards,
Leon

Hi Leon,
the settings are identical with the ones you posted, user or computer authentication.
The NPS log does not register any log after establishing network connection, not before and not after. So it's zero logs on the affected PC's.
