2012 Std R2
I just built the server, added accounts, printers and setup Shares via the wizard. I did custom permissions to share not with "everyone" but specific member groups (Users) full control. I made sure the user accounts had the member groups (Users).
On the server I can open the shared folder and see all items
On the client I can open the shared folder (n:\ and it opens but is empty.
I moved from SBS2008 and did the share the same way. What am I doing wrong. Once the shares work 2012 R2 is ready for prime time.

Successfully re-created shares. I had to delete what I had and re-entered shares. The first cut of Shares was when I first built the server. It looks like I should have waited until more of the server was configured.

What is curious about server 2012 is that I can see the sub folders in the shared folder via "This PC" explorer but if I right click on the share name in the files dashboard, open it, the same folder comes up empty.
How do I get the shares to view inside the folder?

Hi,
It seems related to NTFS permission.
Please check if your test user do have permission in both Share and Security tab (share and NTFS permission). Specifically add the user specifically to NTFS permission with full control and see if it could see subfolders via UNC path.

Hi,
I agree with Shaon Shan. It seems to have something to do with the NTFS permissions and ABE (access based enumeration). Try setting up the share with the everyone permission on the share and the security settings for the wanted groups.

I just checked EAB in the settings. no affect. I went to the folder and in properties I added "Users" with full control. Still no affect and the client is in users group. I added client name to the security users, still no affect.
I copied this set of folders from the old SBS2008 server via an external USD drive. Cold that be the source of my problem. The folder has "read only" check box?
Also, why would open Share from the dashboard come up empty while opening the folder via This PC shows sub-folders? I am on DC.

Hi,
I still think it related to ABE. Open the Share from Dashboard is still accessing a shared folder, which open via This PC is actually accessing a local folder. ABE will not work in this way so you got the difference.
Please accept my apology if the following question seems dumb: Whether the group "Users" or the account you added to the folder is domain user group/domain account?
Please check the following permission settings:
1. I call the "shared folder" root folder. So please check the NTFS permission of the root folder and add your test user to the list with Full Control permission.
2. Check one of its subfolders and add the test user to NTFS permission with Full Control as well.
See if it will still invisible.
3. If so, try to disable UAC (User Access Control) on server just for a test.
4. If issue still exists, try to disable ABE. This could be done in MMC - File and storage management snap-in. Right click on the root folder and choose Properties - Advanced - uncehck" Enable access-based enumeration".

Still no access. Here is what I tried
- Verified at the root of the shared folder {Common Programs} on drive G that Domain\Users have full control. I added one client, by name, to the security group with full control. On client, still empty folder.
- Disabled UAC, open from share dashboard, still empty folder
- opened MMC, no file and storage snap-on (Std 2012 R2)
- Unchecked ABE in settings of share dashboard, still empty
- Client is in group domain\users
What can I do to get a simple share working? Please help

Maybe this is a silly question, but here goes...
when I open the share dashboard for the shared folder and look at permissions, I see a table of entries providing access levels. Am I suppose to do anything here? Which one do I choose?
In SBS2008 R2 I know exactly how to set permissions, in STD 2012,how different is it?
Thanks
