Question

I have a wired xbox controller that automatically moves from Player 1 to Player 2 mid-game. Any idea how to get the controller to be recognized as Player 1 or Controller 1 without a reboot?
Thank you

Hi,
Found on forum describing similar issue.
The solution that worked best for me was unplugging all other controllers (Save for your keyboard, mouse, and 360 pad).
Then go to Control Panel->"Game Controllers" (In Vista/7, just type Game Controllers into the start menu search).
Once there, click "Advanced", select the 360 Controller from the drop-down, and then hit Ok both times. That should set the 360 controller to "Primary".
Then launch the game, go to Options, and switch "Player 1 Input" over to the 360 controller.
For XBOX issue, please post the issue to XBOX forum. It’s a right place you could get more help.

Thank you for replying, Carl. This is not solve the issue.
I am Windows 10 Home user. Version 10.0.17134. I am not seeing a Primary option in Game Controllers under Control Panel. Restoring to default does nothing.
A reboot fixes the issue. However this happens every single time I play a game for 5+ minutes so a reboot each time is not a solution. Each time I remove a controller or USB device from the Device Manager, a reboot is needed as well. I have read some things that the issue is actually Xbox software on Windows 10.

Hi,
Thank you for your update.
After my search, the reboot does work out, but as you said, it's not a solution. For Windows 10, we could try to reinstall the driver. Then I consider that you could check for update. A later version might solve this problem. Of course this could be an Xbox software issue, so I suggest you go to the Xbox Forum for Support before. They know more about Xbox products.
Meanwhile, I find a similar case in the link below. You could check if it is helpful.

Hi Carl
Thank you again. No joy in a solution yet. I did post the issue over at xbox, https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/xba_wowpc/how-to-edit-which-player-a-xbox-controller-is/01b0568e-5ae0-46f3-8967-637483636f18?tm=1551749398731
From the Toms thread, it was a windows update issues. I am up to date with drivers and windows updates.

Hi,
Thank you for your update.
Yes, for x box software, it may have compatibility or functional issues. Uninstall it could be a method. What I wasn't sure about was whether I could make a change without uninstalling it. So ask to Xbox forum is a better way. They'll be more familiar with Xbox products.
Anyway, glad to hear that you have found a solution and thank you for sharing it here, it will be helpful to other community members who have same questions.
