Hello All,

I'm working in a healthcare product.

We are still using Windows Embedded Standard 7

When I google about Windows Embedded Standard 7's Extended End Date is Oct 13, 2020.

I have few questions.

  1. What are the disadvantage of continuing the same Windows Embedded Standard 7 OS?
  2. What is the alternative for Windows Embedded Standard 7?

Thanks in advance,

Rajan

Once a product has reached the end of the extend date (10 years) it is EOL and end of ship. According to Microsoft new products cannot be shipped out. Replacements can be shipped out. Your Microsoft distributor can explain this in more detail. To ship a product, you need the WES7 stickers to be placed on each unit. unless you get special approval from Microsoft via your distributor to continue to ship product, stickers will no longer be available.

Microsoft introduced Windows Embedded 8 Standard and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry. Don't use either of these Windows 8 based products. They are terrible. The next product to use after WES7 is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise (aka Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC). To understand a little more about Windows 10 releases, please see this article: (https://www.annabooks.com/Articles/Articles_IoT10/Windows-OEM-LTSC%20Rev1.2.pdf). For Embedded/IoT Microsoft has released Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2015 and 2016, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, and the latest is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021. I would start with the later one as it has the longest time to EOL date.

As far as build tools, you will be using SIM to create answer files. The development process is a little different than WES7. My workflow paper and book cover the fundamental details.
