Training: Instruction to develop new skills.
Open an Azure support request for Azure for Students verification, because GitHub Student Developer Pack approval does not complete Microsoft’s separate academic eligibility check for Azure.
Submit the verification case
- Sign in to the Azure portal with the Microsoft account used during the Azure for Students activation.
- Go to Help + support.
- Select Create a support request or New support request.
- Choose Subscription management or Billing, then select the closest available category for Azure for Students verification.
- Include:
- Exact error: “Unable to confirm University ID.”
- Your university’s name and school email domain.
- Date and approximate time of the latest failed attempt.
- Confirmation that the GitHub Student Developer Pack is approved.
- A screenshot of the error, with personal identifiers hidden.
- Whether other current students at your university can activate the offer.
- Keep a current student ID or enrollment letter available if support requests proof; do not post those documents publicly.
Azure provides billing and subscription support through Help + support → New support request.^1^ A support ticket can also be created without an existing subscription, although the documented CLI route requires the appropriate problem-classification ID.^2^
Why GitHub approval did not activate Azure
The GitHub Student Developer Pack and Azure for Students perform separate offer-verification processes. The GitHub benefit directs you to Azure’s signup workflow, but GitHub approval alone does not grant the Azure subscription. A closely matching case with the same error reports that Azure may be unable to match the institution in Microsoft’s academic verification system.^3^
Having an existing Azure account under the university address also does not establish eligibility for the student offer. Microsoft lists these requirements:
- Full-time attendance at an accredited, degree-granting two-year or four-year institution.
- Academic-status verification through the institution’s email address.
- Age 18 or older.
- No previous Azure for Students subscription beyond the offer’s one-subscription-per-eligible-customer limit.^4^
Institution-side check
If support reports that the university or email domain is not recognized, contact the university’s IT or academic licensing department and ask whether:
- The university’s current email domain is registered correctly with Microsoft.
- The institution is recognized for Microsoft academic offers.
- Other students using the same domain can activate Azure for Students.
Do not create a pay-as-you-go subscription merely to retry student verification. It is a different offer and may require a payment method. Use it only if Azure support confirms that the student offer is unavailable and paid Azure access is acceptable.
