Azure Blob Storage on IoT Edge 1.4.4

Hi,

Is Azure Blob Storage on IoT Edge 1.4.4 still supported for production security fixes? I am referring to dockerhub image repo

Currently I use below version in containerized form on an edge kubernetes environment deployed using helm charts. But below image version has reached EOL I believe.

mcr.microsoft.com/azure-blob-storage:1.4.4-linux-amd64

I want to use the latest supported version of azure-blob-storage for edge production environments (NOT cloud or dev or testing environments), but I could not find any production-suitable releases with latest updates in dockerhub.

What is the latest supported image for production that preserves local/offline Blob APIs (usable with azure blob SDKs)?
If it is not supported any further, what is the appropriate replacement and guide for this migration? Going down the links mentioned in the above dockerhub repo, I am led to releases of IoT edge runtime which has a container image. Will that be a proper replacement for my usecase? Kindly suggest

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A

Hello @Aishwarya Singh I hope you are doing well,

Azure IoT Edge 1.4 LTS reached end of support on November 12, 2024, and the current supported LTS branch is IoT Edge 1.6, which is supported through November 14, 2028.

However, your question is specifically about:

    mcr.microsoft.com/azure-blob-storage:1.4.4-linux-amd64

And whether there is a newer supported production version of Azure Blob Storage on IoT Edge.

From the available Microsoft documentation, I have not found a published support matrix or lifecycle document that identifies:

    • A newer production-supported Azure Blob Storage on IoT Edge image,
    • An independent servicing lifecycle for the azure-blob-storage image,
    • Or a documented drop-in replacement that preserves the local Azure Blob Storage API and Azure SDK compatibility.

    A few important observations:

    • Upgrading the IoT Edge runtime to 1.6 does not automatically imply that a newer Blob Storage on IoT Edge module image exists.
    • Azure IoT Operations is Microsoft's strategic direction for Arc-enabled Kubernetes environments, but it is not a drop-in replacement for Azure Blob Storage on IoT Edge and does not expose the same Blob Storage REST/SDK endpoint model.
    • Azurite is intended for development and testing and should not be considered a production replacement.

    Given that your requirement is:

Production use + local/offline Blob APIs + compatibility with Azure Blob SDKs
