An Azure platform as a service offer that is used to deploy web and cloud applications.
Check the approved GitHub Student Developer Pack benefits page for a 25-digit Azure for Students verification code and redeem it if one is offered; this is the most direct available route because that code can bypass the unrecognized academic-domain check.^1^
1. Check for the GitHub redemption benefit
- Sign in to the GitHub account whose Student Developer Pack is approved.
- Open the Student Developer Pack benefits page and locate the Microsoft Azure benefit.
- If it displays a 25-digit verification code, select the Azure benefit and redeem that code using the Microsoft account associated with your university address.
- If GitHub only redirects to Microsoft and does not provide a code, proceed to the support route below.
GitHub approval alone does not necessarily activate Azure eligibility. Microsoft’s published Azure for Students requirements specify verification through the institution’s email address, and the offer is restricted to eligible full-time students at accredited, degree-granting institutions.^2^ A matching Q&A case also states that GitHub Education and Azure use separate verification systems, so GitHub approval does not automatically synchronize to Azure.^3^
2. Request review without using the Azure portal
Since the portal support path already fails with AADSTS16000, do not repeat that route. Use the dedicated Azure Education support link instead:
- Azure for Education support
- Select Azure for Students or the nearest academic-verification option, if those choices are displayed.
- If that route is unavailable, use the public no-portal Azure support request: Create a support request. Microsoft’s Azure sign-in guidance specifically provides this route for users who cannot sign in to the portal.^4^
- The general Microsoft Support page can also route account and billing questions to an available contact method such as chat.^5^
Include:
- University name and country/region.
- Academic email domain; mask the username in public posts.
- Exact “email/domain is not registered” message.
- The
AADSTS16000message, timestamp, and screenshot. - Confirmation that the GitHub Student Developer Pack is approved.
- Whether the GitHub benefit page offers a 25-digit Azure code.
- Whether classmates using the same domain can activate the offer.
- Student ID, enrollment letter, or transcript only through a private official support channel and only when requested.
Manual review or document upload is not guaranteed; no documented student self-service upload process is provided.
3. Ask the university to request domain onboarding
The “domain is not registered” message commonly means that Microsoft’s academic verification service does not recognize the institution’s email domain. Creating a Microsoft account with that address does not itself register the university domain.^1^
Ask the university IT or academic administration office to:
- Confirm that the address is an active institutional student account.
- Confirm that the university is an accredited, degree-granting institution.
- Contact its Microsoft Education representative or partner channel to request review/onboarding of the academic domain.
This is the longer-term path because an individual student cannot register an institution’s domain.
4. Treat the portal sign-in error separately
AADSTS16000 concerns access to the Support Portal application; it does not establish why the academic domain is unrecognized. Microsoft’s identity troubleshooting page documents the similar—not identical—AADSTS50020 case, where a personal live.com account can be placed in the Microsoft Services tenant without an associated directory.^6^
As a one-time session check, sign out of all Microsoft accounts and open a private browser window, then sign in using only the intended university-linked Microsoft account. If AADSTS16000 remains, use the no-portal support routes above rather than creating another Azure offer or tenant solely to address this verification issue.
