API Management Service: Managed Developer Portal URL Not Opening in Dev Portal — Issue with Operation Links

The image summarises quite well the issue. A DELETE operation becomes a GET, and even the URL start is wrong (beside the domain name). It affects all operations in the API and all our API's (about 50). No changes have been done to our OpenAPI specs.

Likely cause: this usually happens when the managed developer portal content is out of sync with the latest API operation metadata (or operation IDs changed), so the "Try it" link resolves to a different operation than expected.

1. Confirm whether the API operation identifiers changed recently.
2. If operationIds/paths/methods were renamed in OpenAPI revisions, stale portal content can still reference old bindings. Check the latest API revision and operation list in API Management first.
3. Republish/synchronize the managed developer portal.
4. In API Management, open Developer portal -> Content updates (or publish flow) and republish after confirming the latest API revision is selected. This forces portal metadata refresh for operation pages.
5. Validate operation routing from the portal side.
6. Open the portal in an InPrivate window, navigate to the same operation, and compare:
7. • displayed HTTP method/path
   • • operationId
   • • generated Try-it endpoint
     • If these differ, the page binding is stale/cached rather than backend gateway behavior.
   • 1. Check for custom widget or custom script overrides.
     2. If you customized operation pages/widgets, temporarily disable custom script/widgets and retest. Custom routing logic can override operation links.
   • 1. Re-test with a clean API revision.
     2. As a diagnostic branch, create a new revision from the current spec, publish that revision to the portal product, and verify whether Try-it links resolve correctly there.
   • Validation checks
   • • At least 3-5 different operations should open with matching method/path and not cross-link to another operation.
     • • Browser network trace should show the portal requesting the expected operation metadata ID.
     • Notes
     • • Republish/sync may take a short propagation window.
       • • If issue persists after republish + clean revision test, collect HAR + operation IDs and raise Azure support because this can be a portal metadata/indexing defect.

Likely cause: the managed developer portal is serving stale operation bindings (or mismatched operation IDs) after API changes, so “Try it” opens a different operation URL.

1. Validate operation identity in APIM first.
2. Check whether operationId/path/method changed in recent API revisions. This issue is common when portal content still references older operation metadata.
3. Republish/sync the managed developer portal.
4. From APIM developer portal management, republish after confirming the latest API revision is associated with the product.
5. Test for stale/cached portal mapping.
6. Use InPrivate browser and compare displayed method/path versus the URL opened by “Try it in dev portal”. If method/path mismatch persists, it points to portal metadata mapping, not gateway runtime.
7. Check custom widgets/scripts.
8. If custom scripts/widgets are used in operation pages, temporarily disable them and retest, because custom routing logic can override operation links.
9. Diagnostic branch: publish a new API revision.
10. Create a clean revision from current OpenAPI, publish it, and validate whether operation links resolve correctly there.
