Got an end-user with a new laptop (Autopilot). She has this small timer or clock on top of whatever she has on her desktop, in the same position. What is it, and how do I turn it off?

Hello Mike,

What you’re seeing on the user’s desktop is not a native Windows feature. That small floating timer/clock overlay is typically caused by a third‑party utility that was either preinstalled by the OEM or deployed through Autopilot provisioning. Windows itself does not ship with a persistent countdown widget pinned above all applications. The most common culprits are vendor utilities such as Dell Optimizer, Lenovo Vantage, HP OSD tools, or bundled productivity apps that include focus timers. Another possibility is that a Chrome extension or Zoom plugin has spawned a floating overlay window.

To confirm, check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) under the Processes tab and look for any application that is not part of the standard Microsoft stack but is running in the background with a window handle. If you right‑click the process and choose “Open file location,” you’ll quickly identify whether it’s an OEM utility or a third‑party app. You can also run msconfig or check Startup Apps in Settings > Apps > Startup to see if the timer is being launched at logon.

If it turns out to be an OEM utility, you can disable it either by uninstalling the application from Programs and Features or by disabling its startup entry. If it’s a productivity app like “Focus Booster” or “Pomodoro Timer,” simply close or uninstall it. In rare cases, it may be a widget enabled through Windows 11 Widgets (Win + W). If so, open the Widgets panel, look for any active timer widget, and remove it.

Since this is a new Autopilot laptop, I’d recommend checking the provisioning profile in Intune. Look under Device Configuration > Apps to see if any timer or productivity app was silently pushed during enrollment. Removing it from the assigned profile will prevent recurrence on other devices.

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!HP.
