Try these PowerPoint troubleshooting steps in order:

    1. Install the latest Office updates Newer PowerPoint hangs, freezes, or failures can be caused by outdated Office files. Update Office first.
    2. Check whether PowerPoint is busy with another process If PowerPoint is working on another task, that status appears in the bar at the bottom of the window. Let that task finish before trying other actions.
    3. Start PowerPoint in Safe Mode and disable add-ins Add-ins can cause PowerPoint to fail or stop responding.
      • Select Start
      • Type PowerPnt /safe
      • Open PowerPoint
      • If it works in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins
      • Select COM Add-ins and click Go
      • Clear all add-in checkboxes
      • Restart PowerPoint If the issue stops, re-enable add-ins one at a time to find the one causing the problem.
    4. Repair Office
      • Close all Office apps
      • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features
      • Right-click Microsoft Office
      • Select Change
      • Select Repair
    5. Update antivirus software Out-of-date antivirus software can interfere with PowerPoint.
    6. Check antivirus integration with PowerPoint Some antivirus products integrate directly with PowerPoint and can cause performance problems. Disabling that integration or disabling PowerPoint-related antivirus add-ins can help. Warning: Changing antivirus settings can make the PC more vulnerable to malicious attacks. Use that workaround carefully.
    7. Change the default printer PowerPoint loads a default printer, and changing it can help:
      • Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound
      • In the printers list, right-click Microsoft XPS Document Writer or Send to OneNote
      • Select Set as default printer
    8. If PowerPoint crashes when opening files with images or video An older Intel 510, 520, or 620 graphics driver can cause crashes with media files. Update the Intel graphics driver to the latest version.
    9. If the error is specifically ai.exe - Entry Point Not Found This issue was fixed in Office version 2305 build 16.0.16501.20228. Systems on older Office 2305 builds, especially on older Windows versions such as Windows 10 1607/1511/1507 or Windows Server 2016, should update Office to that build or later.

If none of these steps resolves it, the documented next step is advanced troubleshooting such as a selective startup, and then contacting Microsoft Support.
