Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
If the folders were restored but came back empty, the folder structure was recovered but the messages are no longer present in locations that can be restored through Outlook.com.
Supported recovery path:
- Check the restored folders in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com and use search to look for known senders or subjects from those missing messages.
- Check Deleted Items and Junk Email again. Items in Deleted Items are automatically deleted after 30 days, and junk email is also retained for 30 days before automatic deletion.
- In Deleted Items, select Recover items deleted from this folder and review everything available there. If found, select the items and choose Restore.
- If items are restored from Recoverable Items, they go to Deleted Items first. Move them from Deleted Items back to another folder.
- If the messages are not in the restored folders, Deleted Items, Junk Email, or Recover items deleted from this folder, Outlook.com does not provide another self-service recovery path from the mailbox.
What is supported about server-side recovery:
- The available recovery locations described are Deleted Items, Junk Email, and Recoverable Items.
- For Outlook.com and Outlook on the web, if deleted messages are not visible in Recover items deleted from this folder, they were probably permanently removed from Deleted Items or Junk Email.
- For managed environments, an administrator may have retention policies and may still be able to recover an item after the user recovery period expires. That admin-based recovery statement applies to administrator-managed mailboxes, not personal Hotmail/Outlook.com accounts.
For a personal Hotmail account, if the items are missing across Outlook on the web and the app, and they do not appear in Recover items deleted from this folder, the remaining step is to contact Outlook.com Support for mailbox review. If support also cannot locate the items, the messages cannot be restored.
Use Outlook.com support from Help in the menu bar, enter the issue, then scroll to Still need help? and select Yes. If sign-in help is needed, use the separate support entry provided there.
