    Hello,

Usually, this error appears if you have blocked 'Microphone access' in your system settings.

    1

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

    Ensure -

    • Microphone Access
    • Let apps access your Microphone toggle is turned on.
    • Under that, ensure you have allowed Microphone access for the apps you wish to enable.

    micrphone (1)

    2

If you are still having the issue,

make sure the microphone isn't muted.

    • Click Windows + R key, type mmsys.cpl and click ok.
    • Select your default microphone device in the Recordings tab and click "Properties".
    • In the levels tab, make sure the Microphone isn't muted.

    3

    Reinstall Audio drivers.

    • Open the Device Manager.
    • Expand the arrow next to Sound, Video and game controllers.
    • Right-click your default audio driver, Realtek (R) if listed, select Uninstall device, then select the "Attempt to delete the driver software for this device" checkbox, and then click Uninstall.
    • After uninstalling, restart your computer and check whether the audio input device is recognized.

Let me know if you still need more help.

If microphone access is already enabled for apps, the next fixes are to verify the correct input device, test the mic, and reinstall the audio driver if Windows is not detecting it properly.

    1. Check microphone privacy settings again in Windows 11:
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
      • Make sure Microphone access is On.
      • Make sure Let apps access your microphone is On.
      • For the specific app that fails, make sure its toggle is On.
      • If the app is a desktop app, make sure Let desktop apps access your microphone is On.
    2. Make sure the laptop microphone is selected as the input device:
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      • Under Input, select the built-in microphone.
      • Open the microphone properties.
      • Under Input settings, use Start test, speak normally, then Stop test and Play to confirm audio is being captured.
      • If needed, raise the Input volume.
    3. If the mic is built into a webcam, also check camera permission:
      • Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      • Make sure camera access is turned on.
    4. Check simple hardware conditions:
      • Make sure the laptop does not have a microphone mute key or mute button enabled.
      • If using a headset or webcam mic, make sure it is connected correctly.
    5. If apps still say to enable the mic, reinstall the audio driver.
      • Note: uninstalling the device removes the current driver and may temporarily disable audio until Windows reinstalls it.
      • Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
      • Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      • Right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
      • Select the option to remove or delete the driver software for the device, then uninstall.
      • Restart the PC.
      • After restart, Windows should reinstall the audio device automatically. If not, return to Device Manager, right-click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes.
      • Then right-click the audio driver and select Update driver.

If Windows detects the microphone in Sound settings and the test works there, but apps still cannot use it, the issue is usually app-level microphone permission or desktop app access.
