That error usually points to a display driver problem or a connection issue between Windows and the external monitor.
Try these steps in order:
- Press Windows logo key + P and make sure Extend is selected.
- Disconnect all accessories from the PC, including docks, dongles, and adapters, then reconnect only the monitor.
- Check that the HDMI cable is firmly connected on both ends.
- Try a different HDMI cable.
- If the PC has another video output port, try that port.
- Reset the graphics driver by pressing Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.
- Restart the PC: Start > Power > Restart.
- If the problem started after an update, roll back the display driver:
- Search for Device Manager
- Expand Display adapters
- Right-click the display adapter > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver
- If Roll Back Driver is not available, reinstall the display driver:
- Search for Device Manager
- Expand Display adapters
- Right-click the display adapter > Uninstall device
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device
- Select Uninstall
- Restart if prompted
- Open Device Manager again
- Expand Display adapters
- Right-click the adapter > Update driver
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software
- Make sure Windows is fully updated from Settings > Windows Update.
If one external monitor works but this monitor still does not, test the monitor with another system and test the PC with another monitor or cable to isolate whether the issue is the monitor, cable, or the PC.
If the issue continues after these steps, file a report in Windows Feedback Hub.
