How do I find *DETAILED* IMAP server settings in New Outlook

I'm trying to configure a new PC (Windows 11 - all fixes and updates installed). My primary email program was Thunderbird on my old PC, but I cannot get it to connect to my email provider on the new PC.

I decided to try Outlook since I have MS 365. The 'New' Outlook (NO) connects immediately, but I don't like it.

Next step was to try the 'Classic' Outlook (CO). But, it can't connect to the server using what little info I can find in NO and also provided by my internet provider.

So, how do I get the DETAILED configuration info for IMAP and SMTP out of New Outlook? Going to File | Account only gives me partial information.

Thank you, Harry Z

New Outlook does not provide the full detailed IMAP/SMTP configuration needed for manual setup in the same way classic Outlook does. For detailed server information, use one of these supported paths:

    1. Check the mailbox settings in webmail
      • Sign in to the account using Outlook Web App.
      • Go to Settings > Mail > POP and IMAP.
      • The POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP server names and other required settings are listed there.
    2. If the account is Microsoft 365 email
      • For Microsoft 365, the server name for IMAP and POP is partner.outlook.cn.
      • The server name for SMTP is smtp.office365.cn.
    3. If classic Outlook cannot find settings automatically, add it manually
      • Open classic Outlook.
      • Select File > Add Account.
      • Enter the email address.
      • Select Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually > Connect.
      • Select IMAP.
      • Enter the incoming and outgoing server settings, then select Next.
      • Enter the password and select Connect.
    4. If classic Outlook is already configured but not connecting, verify the full settings in Control Panel
      • Open Control Panel.
      • Open Mail.
      • Select Email Accounts.
      • Select the account, then Change.
      • Verify:
        • Incoming mail server
        • Outgoing mail server
        • User Name and Password
      • Select More Settings > Advanced.
      • Compare:
        • Incoming server (IMAP) port
        • Outgoing server (SMTP) port
        • encryption type for both servers
      • Select Test Account Settings.
      • Green check marks mean the settings are correct. Red markers mean one or more settings are wrong.
    5. Important limitation
      • Manual setup in classic Outlook is not available for Microsoft 365 or Exchange accounts, unless using POP or IMAP and that access is enabled for the account.

If the goal is to get the exact detailed IMAP/SMTP values, the reliable source is the mail provider’s settings page or the mailbox’s POP and IMAP page in webmail, not New Outlook.

The suggested answer provided by some sort of AI is not useful. The Outlook Web App does not connect to non-Microsoft email.

    Hi HarryZ

New Outlook does not expose the full IMAP/SMTP configuration details (server names, ports, authentication methods, encryption settings, etc.) for accounts it has already connected. It is designed to use automatic account discovery and cloud synchronization rather than acting as a source of manual configuration data.

If New Outlook successfully connected to a third-party email account, the authoritative source for the IMAP/SMTP settings is still your email provider's documentation or support site, not New Outlook. Microsoft's documentation for mail clients similarly notes that non-Microsoft account settings must generally be obtained from the email provider.

    A few suggestions:

    1. Ask your email provider for the exact:
      • IMAP server and port
      • SMTP server and port
      • Encryption method (SSL/TLS or STARTTLS)
      • Authentication requirements
    2. In Classic Outlook, use File → Add Account → Advanced options → Let me set up my account manually and enter those settings directly.
    3. If Thunderbird and Classic Outlook both fail while New Outlook succeeds, the provider may be using OAuth/modern authentication that New Outlook handles automatically but older manual configurations do not.

If you're comfortable sharing the email provider's domain (for example, Gmail, Yahoo, Comcast, your own hosted domain, etc.), someone may be able to point you to the correct IMAP/SMTP settings.

If you do File -> Account Info -> {Select an Account} -> [Manage] for an IMAP Account, do you not see?

    User's image

If this doesn't help, can you please provide the domain (the part after the "@") of the email account you are trying to add to Classic Outlook?
