How to create and format an outline template in Word (for Mac)

Earlier this year I created an outline from Word's pre-made template (I believe) ... it was great. When I would hit Enter, the next level appeared ... if I hit enter, enter the text would revert to a higher level ... and if, instead, I hit Enter+Tab, the next line would be the level below.

For some reason, the enter+tab option is not working to advance to a lower level on the outline. I am desperate to figure out how to that to work again. (law school student starting to create all my course outline.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use Outline view for this behavior.

    1. In Word, open the document and select View > Outline.
    2. In Outline view, create the structure using heading levels:
      • Level 1 for main topics
      • Level 2 for subpoints
    3. When the document is in Outline view:
      • Press Enter at the end of a heading to insert another heading at the same level.
      • To move a heading to a lower level (demote it), press Alt+Shift+Right Arrow.
      • To move a heading to a higher level (promote it), press Alt+Shift+Left Arrow.
    4. If subtopics are needed under a main item, type the main item, press Enter, then use the demote command to make the next line a lower-level heading.
    5. When finished, select Close Outline View.

If the document is not in Outline view, the Enter behavior will not match outline editing. One accepted Microsoft Q&A answer for this exact symptom states that in Outline view, pressing Enter at the end of a heading inserts another heading at the same level, and the view provides easy promote/demote controls.

You should be able to use Tab and Shift+Tab for demoting and promoting list levels.

For what you are describing it might be worth your while to use Outline View. Outline View is a standard feature of the program with no template needed. Please see these definitive articles:

    Outline - Rado

    Outlining - Kenyon

The articles are based on illustrations in Word for Windows but Outline View in Mac Word is virtually identical.

BTW: Charles Kenyon is an attorney.
