For recording a band, the best approach is to use an usb audio interface rather than plugging the sound source directly into the laptop’s headphone jack. I would not recommend using the 3.5 mm earphone jack. On most HP laptops it is a headset combo jack, meaning headphone output plus a basic mono-mic input. It generally is not a proper stereo line-level recording input.
If by the “lightning” port you mean the USB-C port marked with a lightning-bolt symbol, that is likely a thunderbolt USB-C port. A USB audio interface should work there. The other USB-C port should also work if it supports data; some USB-C ports are charging-only. You might want to reference your computer's specs to review the types of USB-C ports you have.
