How do I connect an external sound input to my HP windows 11 laptop using the USB-C port? Do I use the lighting port or the other USB-c port? Or do I use the earphone output jack? The idea is I, could make recordings of my band.

For recording a band, the best approach is to use an usb audio interface rather than plugging the sound source directly into the laptop’s headphone jack. I would not recommend using the 3.5 mm earphone jack. On most HP laptops it is a headset combo jack, meaning headphone output plus a basic mono-mic input. It generally is not a proper stereo line-level recording input.

If by the “lightning” port you mean the USB-C port marked with a lightning-bolt symbol, that is likely a thunderbolt USB-C port. A USB audio interface should work there. The other USB-C port should also work if it supports data; some USB-C ports are charging-only. You might want to reference your computer's specs to review the types of USB-C ports you have.

Thank you for your time. What I want to do but can't seem to find an answer to is, I would like to record my band right to my laptop. I appreciate the information about the headset microphone combo. I had tried that too and found out the 3.5mm connection wouldn't work. I have tried the 3.5 mm jack adapter to USB-C in both USB-C ports. and that didn't work either.

If it matters, I can see a microphone on my systems page. The one that is used in tandem with the laptop's camera. But I cannot find a way to add another microphone. Or tee into that microphone. So, unless I find another way to get to tie into the existing microphone, I might have to take the machine apart and wire in a connection to the camera microphone but that is just a monaural pick-up which isn't really helpful. Again, thanks for your help.
