can't download a demo

I am trying to download the piano Smartscore demo from Musitek. and in the download folder, I get:

Smartcr64PE.msi isn't commonly downloaded. Make sure you trust SmartScr64PR.msi before you open it.

So it doesn't open, if I reprt as safe, it takes me to a microsoft page, where I choose "I think this is a safe website" and then select letters to prove humanity and submit, but I don't hear anything back. I write to the company and they say to lower my security or turn defender off. I try on a Win7 computer and it quickly downloads but won't open due to a missing DDL or something because of the obsoleteness. I have my friend download on a Macbook pro with no problem

I go to security and add musitek as a safe site, same result. I turn off Windows defender off and same result. Musitek says this is unusual, others don't have this problem. Why can' I get it?

In the download file, it appears as User's image

If I click, it asks what app I want to use to open. Musitek says that is not the fully downloaded file.

So I was able to get past the download problem, and run the demo, try out a lot of things and then decided to buy the product. but when I did so, it wouldn't accept the credentials which I copied and pasted into the box. They said to make sure defender was off, and I am the administrator and I did so but it is still only a demo. they said that it requires a 2-way communication to fully install and something is blocking and they've done all they could and maybe I need to have a computer guru help or take the computer in to solve. Never had such a problem with any other software download.

When you get the notification that it isn't commonly downloaded, click on the three dots and select Keep, then click the drop arrow next to Delete and select Keep anyway.

The file is not fully downloaded. The screenshot shows an *Unconfirmed .crdownload file, which is a partial download, so Windows asks what app should open it because it is not yet a usable .msi installer.

The warning “isn't commonly downloaded” is consistent with Microsoft Edge download protection and SmartScreen. Based on the described behavior, the most likely causes are:

    1. Edge/SmartScreen is blocking or interrupting the download
      • In Edge, open edge://settings/privacy.
      • Under Security, check whether Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is on.
      • If the download is being blocked and the source is trusted, use the download panel in Edge and select More actions (...) next to the blocked item, then Keep > Show more > Keep anyway.
      • If testing requires turning SmartScreen off, turn it back on after the test. Turning it off reduces protection.
    2. Antivirus or Windows Security is stopping the file before completion
      • Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
      • Check for a recent blocked item related to the MSI download.
      • If found and the source is trusted, allow it or add an exception for the download location or file.
      • If real-time protection is turned off for testing, turn it back on afterward.
    3. The download folder or permissions are causing the failure
      • Go to edge://settings/downloads.
      • Verify the Location is valid.
      • In File Explorer, open that folder and confirm:
        • the folder exists
        • a test file can be created there
        • the drive has free space
      • Reset the download location to the default Downloads folder and retry.
    4. A policy or security setting is blocking downloads
      • Open edge://policy.
      • Check for DownloadRestrictions.
      • If it is set to 3, all downloads are blocked.
      • Also check DownloadDirectory in case it points to an invalid or inaccessible path.
    5. The problem may be site-specific or network-related
      • Try the same download on a different network, such as a mobile hotspot.
      • Try the same file in another browser. If it also fails there, the issue is likely not Edge-specific.
      • If a proxy is in use, check edge://settings/system and verify the download URL is not being blocked.
    6. Clear Edge cache and reset download behavior
      • Go to edge://settings/privacy.
      • Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
      • Select Cached images and files, set All time, then Clear now.
      • Go to edge://settings/downloads.
      • Turn off Ask me what to do with each download for testing.
      • Reset the download location to Downloads.

After the file downloads successfully, if Windows still blocks opening it:

    • In File Explorer, right-click the downloaded file > Properties.
    • On the General tab, look for the security message.
    • If present, select Unblock > Apply > OK.
    • Only do this for files from a trusted source.

The key point is that the current file is a partial .crdownload, not a complete MSI package. The fix is to identify what is interrupting the download before trying to open it.
