Adding a Gmail account to the New Outlook

I have 3 separate Gmail accounts. I had all 3 on the new Outlook that was running smoothing for months on my laptop.

All of a sudden, I cannot log into one of my accounts. I deleted it thinking I could fix the issue by deleting it and adding it back. It will not let me add that Gmail account.

When I check Microsoft, it says that account exists and it is on my laptop, but it isn't.

I tried using Co-pilot to help me, but I got frustrated and gave up after many hours.

Hi Lisa Draves,

Thank you for the additional details. Since the account is no longer listed in Outlook and New Outlook closes when you try to add that specific Gmail address, this may point to an issue with the Outlook app profile or the account authentication process rather than a problem with the Gmail account itself.

As a quick test, you can try resetting New Outlook:

  1. Close Outlook completely.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
  3. Find Outlook (new).
  4. Select Advanced options.
  5. Choose Repair first, then try adding the account again.
  6. If needed, use Reset and sign back in.

Because the application is shutting down during the add-account process, it would also be helpful to know whether this happens only with this one Gmail account or if Outlook closes when adding any new account. That distinction can help identify the next troubleshooting step.

For new Outlook for Windows, remove any stale entry for that Gmail account and then add it again from the account settings page:

    1. Open Outlook.
    2. Go to View > View settings.
    3. Select Accounts > Your accounts.
    4. If that Gmail account is still listed there, select Manage next to it.
    5. Under Account details, select Remove.
    6. Return to Accounts > Your accounts.
    7. Under Email accounts, select Add Account.
    8. Enter the Gmail address and select Continue.
    9. In the Google sign-in and permissions window, complete sign-in and select Allow.
    10. When the account is added, select Done.

If Outlook says the account exists on the laptop but it is not visible, that usually means the account is still present in Accounts > Your accounts and needs to be removed there before adding it again.

If the add process still fails:

    1. Confirm the account is being added in new Outlook, not classic Outlook.
    2. Try the add flow again from View > View settings > Accounts > Your accounts.
    3. If prompted by Google, make sure Allow is selected on the permissions screen.
    4. Check whether the Gmail account can still sign in normally at Google, because Gmail connection problems can be caused by Gmail-side settings.

If the issue is specifically that Outlook cannot complete the Google sign-in, there was a known issue in older Outlook builds with the message “Could not sign you in to Google - IMAP”. That issue was fixed in Version 2008 Build 13127.20296. The documented workaround for affected builds was:

    1. Open Outlook or another Office app.
    2. Select File > Office Account.
    3. Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
    4. Enable Enable optional connected experiences.
    5. Restart Outlook and try adding the Gmail account again.
