Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls for optimal communication
If Windows says the system is blocking camera access and the general app permission is already on, check the Windows camera settings that affect desktop apps. Microsoft Teams is a desktop app.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Make sure Camera access is On.
- Make sure Let apps access your camera is On.
- Make sure Let desktop apps access your camera is On.
- Teams needs this setting.
- Desktop apps cannot be allowed one by one in this section.
- If Microsoft Teams (work or school) appears in the app list, turn it off and back on.
- Close all apps and restart the device.
If it still fails, check whether the camera is blocked outside Teams:
- Open the built-in Camera app.
- If the Camera app also shows a blocked, gray, or locked image, the issue is in Windows or the device, not Teams.
- Check for a physical camera shutter, privacy slider, or keyboard camera key on the laptop. Some devices can block the camera at the hardware level.
If the problem happens only in Teams on the web, also allow the camera in the browser:
- Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Camera > turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera > select the correct camera and set Sites can ask to use your camera.
- Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Camera > Settings and allow the Teams site.
- Then refresh Teams and rejoin the meeting.
If the camera works intermittently or is sometimes not detected, try:
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to the camera settings for the device.
- Open Advanced camera options.
- Enable Basic camera driver mode.
- Restart Teams and test again.
If Camera access cannot be changed in Windows settings, an administrator on the device must change it.
