Managing sound and video settings during Teams meetings and calls for optimal communication
If the background shows but the face does not, Teams is often showing a background effect over a covered camera view or privacy screen.
Try these steps in order:
- Turn off background effects or blur in Teams.
- Open the meeting pre-join screen or Teams video settings.
- Set background effects to None.
- Check whether the camera now shows a real image, a gray screen, a lock icon, or a covered view.
- Check whether the camera is physically blocked.
- Look for a camera shutter or slider near the lens.
- Make sure the lens is not covered.
- Some laptops also have a camera privacy key on the keyboard.
- Test the camera outside Teams.
- Open the Windows Camera app.
- If the Camera app also shows a gray image, lock icon, or blocked view, the issue is outside Teams.
- If using a Lenovo laptop, check Lenovo Vantage.
- Open Lenovo Vantage.
- Find the camera/privacy settings.
- Turn off camera privacy mode.
- If supported, press F8 to toggle camera privacy mode.
- Make sure no other app is using the camera.
- Close apps such as Skype or FaceTime.
- If using an external camera, unplug and reconnect it.
- Restart the device.
- Check Teams and browser/device access if needed.
- In Teams desktop, confirm Windows camera permissions are enabled.
- In Teams on the web, allow camera access in the browser site permissions.
- If the camera is intermittent or sometimes not detected:
- Open Settings in Windows.
- Go to the camera settings for the device.
- Open Advanced camera options.
- Enable Basic camera driver mode.
- Restart Teams and test again.
If Teams on the web is being used, browser camera settings can also block video:
- Edge: Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Camera > turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions > Camera > select the correct device and Sites can ask to use your camera.
