Outlook for iOS does not send push notifications for emails moved by Rules – Is there an official solution?

Hello Microsoft,

We have encountered an issue when using Exchange Online with Outlook for iOS.

When a user creates an Outlook Rule that automatically moves an incoming email to a specific folder, for example:

Email received from Sender A → Move to "Customer A"

The Rule works correctly, and the email is successfully moved to the target folder. However, Outlook for iOS does not send a push notification for the new email.

We found that other users have reported the same issue on Microsoft Q&A:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5962841/critical-bug-email-notifications-are-not-working-f

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-sg/answers/questions/4378261/mobile-notifications-missing-for-emails-moved-by-i

Based on these discussions, the behavior appears to be related to the email being moved out of the Inbox before Outlook for iOS can generate a new mail notification.

One suggested workaround is to change the Rule from:

Move to folder

to:

Copy to folder

However, this is not an ideal solution because it creates duplicate emails:

One copy remains in the Inbox.

Another copy is stored in the target folder.

As a result, users end up with two identical copies of the same email.

Our requirement is to keep the existing email organization behavior:

The email should be moved to the target folder, only one copy should exist, and Outlook for iOS should still send a push notification when the email arrives.

We would therefore like to ask Microsoft:

Is this a known bug or limitation in Outlook for iOS?

Is Microsoft currently working on a fix for this behavior?

Will Outlook for iOS support push notifications for emails that are automatically moved to another folder by an Outlook Rule?

Is there currently any officially supported Exchange Online or Outlook configuration that can provide push notifications while keeping the existing Move to folder Rules and avoiding duplicate emails?

If this is a product design limitation rather than a bug, is there any officially recommended solution that can support both automatic folder organization and push notifications?

This issue has a significant impact on users who rely on Outlook Rules to automatically organize incoming emails into different folders.

We would appreciate an official response regarding whether this behavior will be fixed, or whether Microsoft has an officially supported solution.

Thank you.

您好 Microsoft,

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5962841/critical-bug-email-notifications-are-not-working-f

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-sg/answers/questions/4378261/mobile-notifications-missing-for-emails-moved-by-i

Move to folder

改成:

Copy to folder

Inbox

Microsoft

Push Notification?

Push Notification?

As your question was posted in the English (en-US) forum and includes English content, I'll respond in English for your convenience. If you'd prefer the information in another language, please don't hesitate to let me know.

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed explanation of the issue and the impact it is having on your users.

I reviewed the information available in Microsoft documentation as well as the discussions you referenced. While those community threads describe behavior similar to what you are experiencing, they do not provide an official Microsoft statement confirming whether this is a bug, a product limitation, or a behavior that is planned to change in a future release.

Microsoft documentation explains how Outlook rules can automatically move incoming messages to other folders and how mail notifications can be configured in Outlook for iOS and in iOS settings. However, I was unable to find any official documentation stating that Outlook for iOS supports push notifications for messages that are automatically moved to a different folder by an inbox rule. Likewise, I could not find any documented Exchange Online or Outlook setting specifically designed to generate notifications for messages that are immediately moved out of the Inbox.

    For reference, please see:

I understand that the suggested "Copy to folder" workaround does not fully address your requirements, as it results in duplicate messages and changes the intended mailbox organization process.

Based on the publicly available documentation, I could not find an officially documented configuration that guarantees all of the following simultaneously:

    • Automatic organization of incoming emails using Move to folder rules
    • Only a single copy of each message
    • Push notifications in Outlook for iOS after the message has been moved to another folder

I truly appreciate you taking the time to share this feedback and explain your scenario in such detail. If this functionality is important to your organization, I would encourage you to submit feedback to the Outlook product team so that they can better understand the requirement and consider it for future improvements. Feedback from customers helps the team better understand business requirements and evaluate potential future improvements.

You can submit feedback directly from Outlook for iOS through:

    Outlook > Settings > Help & Feedback > Suggest a Feature

Alternatively, feedback can be submitted through the Microsoft Feedback Portal: Microsoft Feedback Portal

I understand how important this functionality is for users who rely on inbox rules to organize business-critical messages. Sharing your scenario and its impact through the feedback channels above is currently the best way to ensure the Outlook product team is aware of this requirement and can consider it for future enhancements.
