How to remove a TEAMS account I do not have access to any longer

I have a TEAMS account that was used for a two-week training program that ended in July. Every time I try to use TEAMS, it takes me to the training program account I no longer have access to. I have two other Microsoft accounts that I would like to use, but cannot figure out how to remove the old one and/or use one of two good accounts.

    Hi Mack,

Thank you for sharing the details of your situation.

I understand that Teams keeps directing you to an old training account that you can no longer access, preventing you from signing in with your other active Microsoft accounts.

To assist you more effectively, could you please provide the following information?

    1. Are you using Teams on Windows, macOS, a mobile device, or a web browser?
    2. Could you confirm whether the old training account and the two accounts you would like to use are personal accounts (Outlook.com / Hotmail) or work or school accounts provided by an organization (Microsoft 365 / Exchange)?
    3. Does the old account appear only in Teams, or is it also listed in your device’s account settings?
    4. When Teams opens, do you see an option such as Use another account, or does it sign in to the old account automatically?

In the meantime, you can try the steps below:

    1. Open Teams, select your profile picture in the upper-right corner, and choose Sign out.
    2. Close Teams completely, then reopen it.
    3. On the sign-in screen, select Use another account and enter the credentials for the Microsoft account you want to use.
    4. If Teams continues selecting the old account, open an InPrivate or Incognito browser window and visit:
      https://teams.microsoft.com/v2/
    5. Sign in with one of your active accounts and check whether Teams opens correctly.

If Teams works in an InPrivate or Incognito window, the issue is likely related to saved account information in the Teams application or browser.

Please feel free to share the information in the comment below. Once I have it, I'll be better positioned to guide you through the next steps.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

    Try this in order:

    1. Sign out of Teams
      • In Teams desktop, macOS, or web, select the profile picture at the top of the app, then select Sign out.
      • In a web browser, if multiple accounts are signed in, select the specific Teams account and then Sign out.
    2. Remove the old work or school account from Windows
      • Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
      • Select the old training account.
      • If Disconnect is available, select it.
      • If the account only shows Manage, then complete removal may require the organization’s IT admin.
    3. If it is listed under personal accounts, remove it there instead
      • Go to Start > Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.
      • Choose the account and select Remove account.
    4. If the old account is a Teams organization in Teams Free, leave that organization
      • In Microsoft Teams Free, go to Settings > Accounts and orgs.
      • Under Accounts and orgs or Organizations, select Leave next to the organization.
      • It can take a few hours to update. Then sign out of Teams and sign back in.
    5. Add and switch to the account that should be used
      • In Teams desktop, select the profile picture.
      • Select Add another account.
      • Choose an existing account or Create or use another account.
      • After adding it, select the profile picture again and switch to the correct account.
    6. If the sign-in screen asks “Which account do you want to use?”
      • That means the same email address exists as both a work or school account and a personal account.
      • To stop that prompt, either rename the personal Microsoft account by changing its primary alias, or contact the organization that created the work or school account and ask them to remove the conflicting entry.
    7. If the old organization still cannot be removed
      • For a work or school account, complete removal may require the organization’s IT admin.
      • If it is a guest/collaboration organization, self-service leaving may not always be available.
