Where is the protection tab in Excel? I am using a modern 2025 MacBook Pro.

In Excel for Mac, Protection is not a ribbon tab. It appears as a tab inside the Format Cells dialog box.

To find it on a Mac:

Select the cell or range.
Press Command + 1 or go to Format > Cells.
In the dialog box, open the Protection tab.

That tab contains options such as:

Locked for locking cells
Hidden for hiding formulas

Important: setting Locked alone does not protect the cells until the sheet is protected. To enforce it, go to Review > Protect Sheet.

If the sheet is already protected and cells cannot be changed, use Review > Unprotect Sheet first.

Hi S Bedard,

On Mac, the Protection tab lives inside the Format Cells dialog, not the ribbon:

Select the cell(s) you want to check.
Press Cmd+1 (or go to Format > Cells) or Control-Click (Right-click) and select Format Cells.
Click the Protection tab: you'll see Locked and Hidden checkboxes there.

If you're actually looking to lock/protect the whole sheet, that's a separate control: go to the Review tab on the ribbon and click Protect Sheet (or Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet if the ribbon tab isn't showing).

In the Allow users of this sheet to list, select the elements that you want users to be able to change.
