No notifications being received from Communities in Teams

We've recently started using the Communities feature since it became available within Teams, however we're not getting any notifications in the Activity Feed when there is a post or when someone is @mentioned.

Had a look at the documentation which indicates that this should be the case, and the advice is to check the Notifications settings. However, in the settings there is no option for Communities within Notifications - https://support.microsoft.com/en-US/viva/engage/getting-started-with-viva-engage-communities-in-microsoft-teams

Checked the version of Teams and it's the most up to date one from what I can see at this time (26213.1006.5014.9784)

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Emma,

From what I understand, the notification settings for Communities are managed separately from the general Teams notification settings, so they can be easy to overlook. To check them, kindly try the following steps in Teams:

    • Open Activity from the left-hand navigation pane.
    • Select the three dots (...) at the top of the Activity feed.
    • Choose Notification settings.
    • Under Communities and Storyline, verify that the notifications you would like to receive are enabled.

It is also worth mentioning that Teams activity notifications are typically triggered by actions such as community announcements, replies, and @mentions. However, a regular community post will not always generate a notification for every community member. Therefore, if the intention is to notify all members, the post should be published as an Announcement by a community administrator.

If you do not see the Communities and Storyline section in your notification settings, you may want to try the following checks:

1/ Compare the behavior in both the Teams desktop app and Teams on the web.

2/ Sign out of Teams completely, then sign back in.

3/ Check with another user in the same organization to see whether the setting is available for them.

4/ Contact your Microsoft 365 administrator and ask them to verify that:

    • Viva Engage sign-in is enabled.
    • Your account has access to Viva Engage.
    • The Communities integration has not been disabled in the Teams Admin Center.

These are listed as prerequisites for the Communities integration. For additional information, you can refer to the following article: Manage Viva Engage experiences in Microsoft Teams.

Finally, if @mentions are still not generating notifications after completing the above checks, it may indicate an organization-level configuration issue rather than a problem with the Teams client itself. In that situation, I would recommend working with your IT administrator to open a support request so the tenant configuration can be investigated further.

    Kind regards,
