I am trying to add people to private channels in my Team (they are all in the main Team), but when I go to add them to a private channel, I get an error that says "Looks like there was an issue. Try adding this person. If it doesn't work, ask your IT admin to add them."

I have the same issue on Mac, Windows, and mobile.

    Hi Michael,

    Thank you for your update.

Based on my research, this issue turns out to be related to a Microsoft service degradation, TM1462874, that causes users cannot access or manage Teams channels. At this time, no additional troubleshooting is required on your side.

I recommend contacting your IT administrator and ask him/her to monitor incident TM1462874in the Microsoft 365 admin center > Service Health for the latest updates, as Microsoft is actively working on a resolution. Once the service has been fully restored, please update Teams to the latest version and restart the application if needed.

Also, as many members of the community may not yet be aware of this incident, I hope you find this information helpful. Sharing or highlighting this response can help bring greater visibility to the issue, making it easier for others who are experiencing similar challenges to find relevant information and support.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I wish you a wonderful day ahead.

    Hi Michael,

For your concern, this is very likely a membership/permission issue. Being an owner of the main Team does not automatically make you an owner or member of every private channel. Only a current owner of that private channel can directly add or remove its members.

For reference: IT Admins - Private channels in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Teams

    User's image

You can check whether you're an private channel by:

    • Open Teams and select the three dots next to the Team.
    • Select Manage team > Channels.
    • Find the private channel and check whether you are listed as a channel owner.
    • If you are only a main Team owner, you need to ask an existing private-channel owner to:
      • Add you as a member of the private channel.
      • Change your channel role to Owner then you can try adding the other users.

If the channel has no valid owner, you truly need to contact your company's IT administrator as the error message indicates.

Hope this information would be useful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

For a private channel, each person added must already be a member of the parent team, and only the private channel owner can add or remove members.

Given that the same error happens on Mac, Windows, and mobile, the most likely cause is a permission or policy restriction rather than a client issue.

    Check these items in order:

    1. Confirm the account adding members is a private channel owner.
      • In Teams, go to the private channel name.
      • Select More options > Manage channel.
      • On the Members tab, verify the role.
      • Only a private channel owner can add members.
    2. Confirm the people being added are already in the main team.
      • Private channel members must first be members of the parent team.
      • If someone was removed and re-added to the team, they must also be added back to the private channel separately.
    3. Try adding members from the private channel management page.
      • Go to the private channel name.
      • Select More options > Add members.
      • Or use More options > Manage channel > Members.
    4. Check whether private channel creation and management is restricted by policy.
      • Private channel access and creation can be controlled at the organization level and team level.
      • A Teams policy can block private channel actions for some users.
      • A team owner can also control whether members are allowed to create private channels under Manage team > Settings > Member permissions.
    5. If the account is not the private channel owner, ask the private channel owner or a team owner to review the channel.
      • Team owners can see the private channel under Manage team even if they are not members.
      • A team owner can delete a private channel, but adding members is a private channel owner action.

If the issue is still occurring, the practical next step is for the IT admin to review the Teams policy assigned to the affected user and the team-level member permissions for private channels.
