error message - Microsoft Word in mail merge

standalone version of Microsoft office 2024 for mac I am attempting to create a mail merge with an excel spreadsheet and a word document. After creating the spreadsheet with the needed columns, i create a word document with the wording needed. I clicked on Select recipient icon and chose the spreadsheet mentioned above.

A dialog box pops up telling me:

This file needs to be opened by the Excel Workbook text converter, which may pose a security risk if the file you are opening is a malicious file.  Choose Yes to open this file only if you are sure it is from a trusted source.

Why am i getting the need ti invoke Excel text converter?

    This is a standard security measure. It's due to one program attempting to read information from a file type which it doesn't support. The file converter has to be evoked.
