Excel suddenly stopped working. I'm trying to type, but it won't activate.

Suddenly, Excel isn't working, and I can't edit anything either. They told me to enter the key, so I did, and they told me to sign up, so I did, but it's not working.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Start Excel in Safe Mode
      • Press Windows key + R.
      • Type Excel /safe and select OK.
      • If Excel opens in Safe Mode, the issue is likely caused by an add-in.
    2. Disable COM add-ins
      • In Excel, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
      • Select COM Add-ins and then Go.
      • Clear all check boxes, then select OK.
      • Close Excel and reopen it normally.
      • If Excel works again, re-enable add-ins one at a time until the problem returns to identify the faulty add-in.
    3. Install the latest updates
      • Update Microsoft 365 and Windows.
      • For Office apps, open an Office app, then go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
      • If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
    4. Repair Office
      • If Safe Mode does not help, repair Office. A quick repair is recommended first, then an online repair if needed.
    5. Check Windows and device drivers
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and install available updates.
      • Also make sure video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard drivers are current.
    6. Reinstall Office if needed
      • If the problem continues, use the Office uninstall troubleshooter and then reinstall Office.

If Excel opens but still will not let editing happen after entering a key and signing in, repair or reinstall Office after completing the Safe Mode and add-in checks.

    Dear @Brooks Alina,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that Excel has suddenly stopped responding to input, and you're unable to edit or type in your workbook. You have already entered the product key and completed the sign-up/sign-in prompts, but Excel is still not working.

To understand the situation better and provide you with the most suitable support, could you confirm the following information:

    • Are you unable to edit all Excel files or only a specific workbook?
    • Do you see any error messages, banners, or notifications in Excel? Is Excel showing "Product Activation Failed", "Unlicensed Product", or "Read-Only" anywhere in the application?
    • Are other Microsoft 365 applications (such as Word or PowerPoint) working normally?
    • Have you recently installed updates or changed your Microsoft account?

Your confirmation would be very helpful in ensuring you receive the most suitable support!

In the meantime, kindly try the following suggestions to check what might have caused the issue:

    • Close all Office applications and reopen Excel
    • Select File > Account and confirm that you are signed in with the correct Microsoft account
    • Check whether Office shows Activated Product under the Product Information section
    • Try opening a new blank workbook and see if you can type in the cells
    • Restart your computer and test Excel again

If the issue persists, please provide a screenshot of the Excel window (including any error messages) so that I could have more information on this and help further.

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful. I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing how things are going!

Thank you for your time and patience.
