Installing or updating the Teams app for education users across supported platforms
Dear @Lou Hudyman
I understand how frustrating it can be when Microsoft Teams gets removed and won't reinstall due to installation errors. I can help you resolve this so you can get back to work quickly.
This error usually happens because left-over cache files or registry fragments from the previous installation are blocking the new installer.
Please follow these steps to perform a clean reinstallation:
Step 1: Use the Web Version (Immediate Workaround)
If you need immediate access to your meetings or chats, you can sign in to the Microsoft Teams Web App using any modern browser: https://teams.microsoft.com
Step 2: Clear Corrupted Teams Cache
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Paste the following path and press Enter:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams - Select and delete all files and folders inside this folder. (Note: This will not delete your personal chat history or files; it only clears temporary data).
Please refer to this document: Clear the Teams client cache
Step 3: Reset App Settings via Windows
- Open Windows Settings (Win + I) > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Teams in the list.
- Click the three dots next to it and choose Advanced options.
- Scroll down and click Repair. If the installation error persists, return here and click Reset.
Please refer to this document: Repair an Office application
Step 4: Download and Reinstall Official Teams
- Restart your computer.
- Download the official, latest installer directly from Microsoft: Download Microsoft Teams Desktop App
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
For detailed troubleshooting on new Teams installation errors, you can refer to the official Microsoft Teams Learn Documentation.
Please try these steps and let me know if you encounter a specific error code during installation so I can assist you further.
