How to fix Script Buttons

Every single one of my automation buttons I've added to all of my organizations documents just became unclickable overnight and I cannot permanently add them back and make them work.

In the web version I cannot click on any of the buttons. In the desktop version I can but most of my coworkers use the web version. If I add a button it will work but if I close and reopen the new button also becomes unclickable. How can I avoid this from happening?

These system breaking changes happen like twice a month and its unacceptable.

I apologize for the inconvenience, I know this must be affecting your workflow.

However, I tested this behavior on my end using Excel for the web and was not able to reproduce the issue you described. The buttons remained clickable during my testing even if I closed and reopened the workbook.

To help determine whether this may be related to a browser or cache issue, could you please try the following:

Clear your browser cache and cookies.
Open the workbook in an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
Test using a different supported browser (use Edge if possible).
Verify whether the behavior is the same for all affected workbooks.

Additionally, when you mention the buttons are "unclickable," could you clarify what you are seeing?

Are the buttons grayed out/disabled?
Or do the buttons appear normal and can be clicked, but nothing happens when clicked?
Do you receive any error messages or prompts?

Could you also create a new Office Script from scratch? You can copy the existing script code, create a new Office Script, paste the code into the new script, save it, and then add a new button linked to that script.

The buttons look normal I just can't click them. The desktop version works as expected.

I can run the scripts from the web version, I just can't use the button to run them. No errors, no prompts.

Thanks for your information. When you hover on the button, does your cursor change to this icon?

Do you see any banner that looks like this after clicking the button?

You can try to clear your browser cache, switch to another browser, or use incognito web.

No it does not change icons. It did 6 hours ago but it stopped across all of my documents.

I am a service support admin for my org but neither of those options allow me to talk with a real person. Its only AI agents and its not comprehending my issue enough to be on the right track.

Then you can open a support ticket via Admin Center.

When you open a ticket, a human agent will be assigned and work on the case with you.

Yes I did that and all I got was an automated response. I would like to talk with a person in real time to resolve this issue and currently this is the only place that's even replying.

If I pause protection and resume protection I can use the buttons but its a shared document and not everyone has the password but everyone needs to be able to use the buttons. The buttons all worked at 7:15am and then stopped being able to click at 7:30am.

Hi @Uchenna Chidozie

After I tested, when a protection is on with a password, another user will not be able to click the button.

If you want to keep the button clickable, go to Manage Protection > Options > Enable Edit Object (like charts and shapes)

Why did this change? Before yesterday, everyone including myself could use the buttons on a protected sheet. I can even get them to work on a protected sheet, just have to pause and resume protect so some glitch is happening in the background

If I make them editable then other people can move and delete them and I cannot have that.

How do I keep them clickable without being able to be deleted?

Making this change on every sheet across thousands of documents due to a change Excel made cannot be the solution. Undoing 18 months work and breaking a system and having ZERO LIVE HUMAN TECH SUPPORT is unacceptable.

I am just a normal user like you, I do not have access to intervene Microsoft product. I am just trying to help you based on my testing.

For now, there is no option that I am aware of to keep the button clickable without being able to be deleted in a protected sheet.When you opened a support ticket and received a ticket number, can you please provide the ticket number via private message? @Daniel-Vo will help you checking the ticket.

How can I talk to a real person? Does microsoft not offer live tech support? This is now day 3 of not being able to do my work.

As I am just a normal forum user like you, I cannot intervene to Microsoft process. All I can ask is your patience as perhaps the agent is handling multiple tickets at the same time.

I get that you can’t do anything but this is currently the only Microsoft thing that is even giving me a response

I already did submit a ticket and they haven’t helped yet

I will keep posting here and the admin center and sending them emails and generally being a nuisance until this is resolved.
