Azure overcharged us by $80K, how can we get a refund?
Hey everyone, did anyone else get hit by that Azure billing bug last month? Our startup credits got drained because of the glitch with the GPT-5.6 models billing. Azure has acknowledged the issue and hs fixed the bug now, but they haven't actually refunded the overages, and our credits are just gone. We've tried for weeks to get support to do something about it, but mostly just keep getting generic responses, no real help or answers.
I also tried to request refund on Azure portal, but I'm stuck because the Azure portal tells me the transaction isn't eligible for a refund???, and I can't find a way to reach the billing team directly. Has anybody found a workaround or managed to get their credits back?
More info about this billing issue from Azure's support team:
The team has completed their investigation and identified a service configuration issue that impacted billing for some customers using GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-5.6 Terra, and GPT-5.6 Luna deployments.
Impact Period: July 9, 2026, 18:00 UTC – July 22, 2026, 18:44 UTC
During this period, a configuration error caused some usage to be mapped to incorrect billing meters, which may have resulted in higher-than-expected charges.
The OpenAI team has confirmed that:
- The configuration issue has been corrected.
- The fix was fully deployed by July 22, 2026.
- Billing for affected deployments is now operating as intended.
- No action is required from customers at this time.
To help prevent similar issues in the future, the team is strengthening validation processes and implementing automated pre-deployment checks to detect configuration issues earlier. They are also working to align this feature with OpenAI so that cache_write_tokens are populated correctly and cache-write usage is billed accurately.
