Hello! I had my Outlook storage full, but I've already solved the problem and freed up space. The problem is that now my account has crashed and I am not receiving any new emails. Does anyone know how to unlock the inbox so that the emails arrive again?

Dear @Williams Phoebe

When an Educational account runs out of storage space, emails bounce back to the senders. Once space is freed up, your account automatically unblocks, but a server-side synchronization delay and local application sync locks can prevent new emails from appearing right away.

Emails sent to you while your mailbox was completely full were rejected immediately and will not be delivered automatically. Senders will need to resend those messages.

Follow these specific steps for Microsoft 365 Education accounts to unblock and verify your email flow:

Step 1: Permanently Empty the "Deleted Items" & "Recoverable Items" Folders

Moving emails to the trash does not immediately free up server quota.

  1. Go to Outlook on the Web for Education (sign in with your school email).
  2. Left-click the Deleted Items folder, select Empty folder, and confirm.
  3. Click the link at the top of the Deleted Items folder that says Recover items deleted from this folder, then choose Empty folder again to purge them from the server reserve.

Step 2: Check Mailbox Quota Status Online

  1. In Outlook on the Web, click the Settings (gear icon) in the top right.
  2. Go to General > Storage.
  3. Confirm that your storage bar is clearly in the green and below your school's assigned limit (typically 50 GB or 100 GB for EDU accounts). User's image

Step 3: Perform a Test Email Check

Send a test message from a personal account (such as Gmail) to your edu email address:

If it arrives: Your mailbox is fully unblocked and working.

If you receive a Bounce-Back / Non-Delivery Report (NDR): Check the error code. If it still says 554 5.2.2 Mailbox full, the Exchange server is still processing your cleared space. Please refer to this document: "554 5.2.2 mailbox full" when sending emails to a mail-enabled public folder

If You Are Still Not Receiving Emails After 4–6 Hours:

Educational Microsoft 365 tenants are managed strictly by your institution's IT department. If the block persists, your school IT administrator can instantly clear the server block for you:

  1. Contact your university/school IT Help Desk.
  2. Ask the admin to verify your Exchange Online Mailbox Quota in the Exchange Admin Center.
  3. Ask them to run the "Mail Flow Troubleshooting" diagnostic on your account to release any lingering hold status. Please let me know if you run into any specific error messages during the process.

If Outlook storage was full, new messages sent during that period are typically returned to the sender and are not delivered later. After space is freed, those missed messages usually must be resent.

For new mail that still is not arriving now, check these items in Outlook.com first:

    1. Check storage again. If Microsoft cloud storage or email storage is still full, Outlook.com cannot send or receive email.
    2. Check the message list filter. Select Filter above the message list and choose All.
    3. Check the Other tab. Messages may be landing there instead of the main inbox.
    4. Check Junk Email, Deleted Items, and Archive. If a message was misclassified, move it back to Inbox.
    5. Check rules and forwarding. Rules or forwarding can move messages out of the inbox automatically.
    6. Check recent sign-in activity. If there was unusual account activity, review the account activity page and secure the account.
    7. If the issue is only on one device, remove the device partnership with the mailbox to fix sync issues.

There is no separate “unlock inbox” action described here. Once the mailbox is back under quota, mail flow resumes. Any messages sent while the mailbox was full generally need to be resent by the sender.
