A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Try these steps in order:
- Update Office
- Open any Office app if possible.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
- Check whether an add-in is causing the apps to close
- Open Run.
- Start the app in Safe Mode:
- Word:
winword /safe - Excel:
excel /safe - PowerPoint:
powerpnt /safe
- Word:
- If the app opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In Manage, select the app add-ins or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear one add-in at a time and restart the app normally.
- Older add-ins such as ABBYY FineReader and Dragon Naturally Speaking are known to cause problems.
- Repair Office
- Select Start and open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office product, then choose Change.
- Select Quick Repair and then Repair.
- Install Windows updates
- On Windows 11: Start > search Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates > Install.
- On Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.
- If this started the first time Office 2016 was opened after the “Let’s get started” screen
- Close the Office app and restart it. That issue is temporary.
If the apps still close after these steps, uninstall and reinstall Office using the Microsoft uninstall troubleshooter.
