I'm trapped in a 2FA authentication loop and cannot access my account

Im completely locked out of my primary work account because the multi-factor authentication prompt keeps failing and throwing error ERR_AUTH_LOOP_403 every time i enter my password. i already tried clearing my browser cookies, reinstalling the authenticator app, and restarting my laptop, but it still redirects me back to the start of the prompt . please see attached screenshot of the exact error window.

NOTE: i actually took my phone and laptop to a local IT repair center and even went to the retail store where i bought my device earlier today, but the technicians there told me there is nothing they can do on their end and that only system administrators can reset my verification method. i have months of critical project data and upcoming client deliverables stored in this account that i simply cannot afford to loose.

Kindly please do the needful and reset my 2FA settings at the earliest. Thanks

    Hello,

The error ERR_AUTH_LOOP_403 indicates that your login request is being rejected at the Azure AD / Microsoft Entra ID level because the account is stuck in a failed multi-factor authentication loop. Clearing cookies or reinstalling the Authenticator app won’t resolve this, because the problem is not client-side - it’s a server-side enforcement of MFA policies tied to your account.

Unfortunately, neither local repair shops nor retail stores have the ability to reset MFA. Only your organization’s Microsoft 365/Azure AD administrator can reset your verification methods. They need to log into the Microsoft Entra admin center, go to Users > select your account > Authentication methods, and either delete the existing MFA methods or reconfigure them. Alternatively, they can run the PowerShell command Reset-MsolStrongAuthenticationMethodByUpn -UserPrincipalName ******@domain.com if they are using MSOnline module, or use Reset-AzureADUserAuthenticationMethod in newer modules. Once reset, you’ll be prompted to set up MFA again on next login.

If you are the administrator yourself and locked out, the only recovery path is through a break-glass account (a global admin account exempt from MFA) or by contacting Microsoft Support directly. You can reach them at Number if you are in the US, or through your local Microsoft support line. They will verify ownership and help reset MFA. Without admin intervention or a break-glass account, there is no supported way to bypass MFA - this is by design to protect organizational data.

Given the urgency of your project data, I strongly recommend escalating to your company’s IT administrator immediately. If you are the sole admin, initiate a support case with Microsoft as soon as possible.

I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to accept the answer. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

    HP.
