Creating and distributing tasks or homework to students through Teams
This message usually means the student was not included in that specific assignment’s recipient list, even if the student is already a member of the class team.
In Teams for Education, assignment access is tied to who the assignment was assigned to. A student can be in the team and still be unable to open an assignment if it wasn’t assigned to them.
Checks to make:
- In the class team, open Assignments and review the assignment details.
- Confirm the assignment was assigned to all students or that the affected students were explicitly included.
- Check the class roster in More options > Manage team and verify the students are present as class members.
- If the students were added after earlier assignments were created, review Assignments > Settings and check New students. This setting determines whether new students receive assignments created before they joined the class.
- For future assignments, verify the default assignment settings before publishing so newly added students are handled the way the class needs.
If the students were added recently and are also not appearing correctly in Class Notebook, open the Class Notebook tab in that class team to trigger provisioning for new members.
If the assignment was definitely assigned to those students and the issue affects multiple users, collect diagnostic data from Assignments and provide it to Microsoft support:
- Desktop/web: press Ctrl+/ inside Teams
- Mobile: touch the screen with two fingers and rotate 45 degrees, or tap with three fingers for 15 seconds
The diagnostic tool can collect data such as Group ID, Tenant ID, Session ID, Assignment ID, Submission ID, and User ID. The data is not sent automatically; it must be copied and shared with a Microsoft support agent on a support ticket.
