Why can't my students access their assignments in Teams?

My students receive notifications indicating that an assignment has been assigned to them. However, when they click on the assignment, they see the message:

"Looks like you haven't been added to this assignment."

The students have already been added to the Team as members, so I'm unsure why they are unable to view the assignment.

What does this message mean, and how can I ensure that students can access the assignments that have been assigned to them?

    Dear @Foster Kayla,

The issue “Looks like you haven’t been added to this assignment” means that the student’s account is not included in that specific assignment’s recipient list. Team membership and assignment membership are related, but they are not identical.

Most commonly, the assignment was published before the students were added to the class team, or it was assigned only to selected students or groups. A channel notification can still be visible to a student even when the underlying assignment was not distributed to that student.

    Kindly try these steps:

Open Teams and go to the affected class team.

Select Assignments > open the affected assignment > More options (...) > Edit assignment.

    Review Assign to:

    • If it shows Individual students, select every affected student.
    • If collaboration groups were used, confirm each affected student belongs to one of the assignment’s groups.
    • If appropriate, change the selection to All students.

Select Done, then save or update the assignment.

Ask one affected student to open the assignment from the class team’s Assignments tab rather than using the original notification. Add a student to a class team | Microsoft Support

Note: If the assignment’s close date has already passed, Teams will not allow newly added students to receive it. Extend or remove the close date first, then add the students.

To prevent it for future assignments:

In the class team, go to Assignments > Settings.

    Find New students.

Enable the option that allows new students to receive assignments created before they joined the class.

    Save the setting.

This setting applies to future assignments after it is saved. Existing assignments may still need to be edited individually. It is recommended checking the full roster under More options (...) > Manage team. Adjust assignment settings in your class team | Microsoft Support

Try to test with a new assignment

Create a small test assignment and leave the audience set to All students. Assign it immediately.

If students can open the test, the original assignment’s recipient list is the issue.

If they cannot open the test, investigate roster synchronization, account identity, licensing, or a tenant-side Assignments problem.

In addition, please remove and re-add the affected students and check if they can access the assignment.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.

The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.

This message usually means the student was not included in that specific assignment’s recipient list, even if the student is already a member of the class team.

In Teams for Education, assignment access is tied to who the assignment was assigned to. A student can be in the team and still be unable to open an assignment if it wasn’t assigned to them.

    Checks to make:

    1. In the class team, open Assignments and review the assignment details.
    2. Confirm the assignment was assigned to all students or that the affected students were explicitly included.
    3. Check the class roster in More options > Manage team and verify the students are present as class members.
    4. If the students were added after earlier assignments were created, review Assignments > Settings and check New students. This setting determines whether new students receive assignments created before they joined the class.
    5. For future assignments, verify the default assignment settings before publishing so newly added students are handled the way the class needs.

If the students were added recently and are also not appearing correctly in Class Notebook, open the Class Notebook tab in that class team to trigger provisioning for new members.

If the assignment was definitely assigned to those students and the issue affects multiple users, collect diagnostic data from Assignments and provide it to Microsoft support:

    • Desktop/web: press Ctrl+/ inside Teams
    • Mobile: touch the screen with two fingers and rotate 45 degrees, or tap with three fingers for 15 seconds

The diagnostic tool can collect data such as Group ID, Tenant ID, Session ID, Assignment ID, Submission ID, and User ID. The data is not sent automatically; it must be copied and shared with a Microsoft support agent on a support ticket.
