How can I add another verification method to Microsoft Authenticator?

I recently got a new phone and am trying to sign in to my Outlook account. However, during the sign-in process, I'm required to verify my identity using the Microsoft Authenticator app.

The problem is that the verification request immediately redirects me to the Authenticator app, making it difficult to switch back and complete the sign-in process. Additionally, I don't see any alternative verification options available. The only method offered is to approve or enter a code through the Authenticator app.

How can I add another authentication method or regain access to my account when the Authenticator app is the only verification option available?

    Hello @Davies Holly,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

To help provide the most accurate and effective solution, could you please share a bit more information about your setup?

    • Since this question is posted under the Business category, can you confirm whether you're signing in with a work or school account or a personal account (such as Outlook.com, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)?
    • Do you still have access to your old phone, and if so, is the Microsoft Authenticator app still installed and able to receive notifications or generate verification codes?
    • Does this issue only occur on Outlook, or also on other Office apps (like Word, Excel,...)?
    • If this is a work or school account, does the account have any administrative role in the organization (Global Admin, User Admin, etc.)? Also, is there another administrator available in the tenant?
    • How was your Microsoft 365 subscription obtained: directly from Microsoft or through a partner/reseller?

This information will help us determine the available recovery options and whether the authentication methods can be reset or reconfigured.

Thank you, and I look forward to your response.
