    Hi,

Based on the issue you described, it appears that Microsoft Word and Excel may have either lost their activation license or the Office installation has become corrupted. As a result, the applications are prompting for a repair and may no longer allow you to create or edit documents normally.

To resolve the issue, please try the following steps:

    1. Verify Office activation
      • Open Word or Excel.
      • Go to File > Account.
      • Check whether the product is activated and signed in with the correct Microsoft account.
      • If you see"Unlicensed Product" or"Activation Required", sign in using the account associated with your Microsoft 365 or Office license. User's image
    2. Repair Microsoft Office
      • Open Control Panel > Programs and Features. User's image
      • Select Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office.
      • Right click > Select Change.
      • Run Quick Repair firstUser's image
      • If the issue persists, run Online Repair (internet connection required).
    3. Check your license status
      • Confirm that the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license is still active and assigned to your account. Expired subscriptions can cause Office to become unlicensed.
    4. Reinstall Office (if needed)
      • If the repair does not resolve the issue, uninstall and reinstall Office using the licensed Microsoft account. Microsoft provides an uninstall and setup troubleshooter to assist with this process.

For more information, please refer to the following link:

If the problem continues, please send me a screenshot of the exact error message displayed in Word or Excel. This will help determine whether the issue is related to licensing, activation, or the Office installation itself.

I hope this information is useful. Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

If Word or Excel shows Repair and then later shows Unlicensed Product or says it cannot find the license, use this order:

    1. Sign in with the correct Office account
      • Open Word or Excel.
      • If prompted, sign in with the account that was used to buy or activate Office.
      • If the wrong account is used, Office can show “We couldn't find any Office products” and remain unlicensed.
    2. Restart the device
      • Wait a few minutes.
      • Restart Windows.
      • Sign back in and open Word or Excel again.
    3. Run an Office repair
      • In Windows 10: right-click Start > Apps and Features.
      • In Windows 11: right-click Start > Installed apps.
      • Select the Microsoft 365 or Office product.
      • Select Modify.
      • If Office is Click-to-run, choose Online Repair > Repair. This is the more complete repair. Quick Repair is faster, but it only detects and replaces corrupted files.
      • If Office is MSI-based, choose Repair > Continue.
      • Follow the on-screen steps.
      • Note: this repairs the entire Office suite, not just Word or Excel.
    4. Check whether an add-in is causing the problem
      • Press Windows Search, type Run, and open Run.
      • For Excel, type: excel /safe
      • For Word, type: winword /safe
      • If the app opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
      • In Manage, select the app add-ins or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
      • Clear one add-in at a time and select OK.
      • If the app does not open in Safe Mode, the issue is not likely caused by add-ins. In that case, repair Office again or reinstall it.
    5. If activation still fails

If the main problem is license not found / unlicensed product, the most important first step is signing in with the correct Office account. If the main problem is repair warnings or app startup failure, the most important step is Online Repair.
