Try this in order:
- Update Office
- Open any Office app if possible.
- Go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
- Run an Office repair from Windows settings
- On Windows 10: right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- On Windows 11: right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office > Modify.
- If prompted with repair choices:
- Start with Quick Repair.
- If that does not fix it, run Online Repair.
- Follow the on-screen steps, then restart the PC.
- If the apps still do not open, check add-ins
- If an Office app can open at all, disable add-ins one at a time.
- If the app starts after disabling one, that add-in is the cause.
- Older versions of ABBYY FineReader and Dragon Naturally Speaking are known to cause problems with Office 2016 apps.
- Install Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- This can fix incompatible device driver issues.
- If Excel opens only to a blank screen
- Run an Online Repair of Office.
If the built-in Repair now button does nothing, use the full repair path from Apps and Features/Installed apps instead of the app prompt.
