Data Protection Manager 2025 – Remote Administration and DPM Database Backup

Hi,

we are using the new Data Protection Manager 2025 and discovered two things which aren't quite clear for us.

  1. Did Microsoft stopped the development of the Remote Administration Console for 2025 because it wasn't possible to install it on another Windows Server 2025 VM. You can still chose DPM Remote Administration when starting the setup.exe but it runs into an error. So is remote administration not possible anymore with DPM 2025 and we have to log in on the backup server every time to use the DPM Console to manage the backups? At least when we want to use the graphical user interface.
  2. After protecting the first virtual machines, our DPM server shows the following notification „DPM Database of your DPM Server is unprotected. To restore the protected DPM Server replicas successfully during a disaster, save the DPM Database in a separate protection group from the DPM Server replicas.“. We added the DPM Database to a new protection group on a second DPM server but the message is still shown, so it seems that the backup server does not recognize it. Do we really have to add the backup of the DPM database to a new protection group on the same DPM server to make the notification disappear? What is the recommended practice with DPM 2025?

I hope someone can shed some light on this and clarify things.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Best regards

  1. As per https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/prepare-environment-for-dpm?view=sc-dpm-2025 : Remote Administration Console: Set up a Remote Administration Console to manage a single DPM server. The DPM Management Shell can be installed on computers running Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, and Windows 10. The computer must be running at least .NET Framework 4.0.
  2. Refer to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/back-up-the-dpm-server?view=sc-dpm-2025#back-up-the-dpm-database
