Teams freezes up when scrolling with mouse in contact people list

For the last couple of days, every time I scroll with my mouse to view my people list of contacts, Teams freezes up. I have to quit and restart. Happens everytime. Turned off GPU accelerator, cleared cache. Reboots. Locks up everytimes.

Try this sequence since GPU acceleration, cache clearing, and reboots were already tried:

    1. Reset the Teams app in Windows.
      • Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > More > Advanced options > Reset.
      • Restart the device after the reset.
    2. Test Teams in the web app.
      • If the freeze happens only in the desktop app and not in the web version, that points to a desktop client issue rather than the account or contact data.
    3. Update the graphics driver.
      • Teams screen and UI rendering issues can be tied to the graphics driver even when GPU acceleration has been disabled.
      • Use the Windows driver update guidance from Microsoft.
    4. Check for background app conflicts.
      • Close unnecessary apps, especially anything that overlays the screen or interacts with input/display behavior.
    5. If the current Teams build still freezes, sign out and sign back in.
      • In Teams, select the profile picture at the top right, choose Sign out, reopen Teams, and sign in again.
    6. If the issue continues, use the web app as a workaround while troubleshooting the desktop client.

The most relevant next steps in this case are the Windows app reset and graphics driver update, because the common local fixes already attempted did not help.

Did all of this from the list, no help. Teams still freezes up when in people contact list and scroll to select a contact. If I do not scroll, it does not lock up. I replaced the mouse and did it without mouse. Same issue

    Hi Troublefield, David SE-AM-FS,

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Thank you for sharing this information.

Based on my test environment, when I navigate to People > Contacts, I am unable to reproduce the same issue.

I can also see that you have already performed numerous troubleshooting steps, but unfortunately the issue has still not been resolved.

In this situation, I recommend creating a support ticket with Microsoft Technical Support so that they can conduct a more in-depth investigation. They have access to the necessary tools and resources to determine whether the issue is related to device configuration, the operating environment, or a recent Teams update.

To contact Microsoft Technical Support, please refer to the following documentation:

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.

I look forward to continuing the conversation.

Not that this helps, but I have tried the same steps and having the same issue without any success of resolving.

Same issue here with one of our users. Adding a few data points in case they help narrow this down.

    Symptoms

    • Teams desktop client freezes once the Contacts list is fully loaded.
    • Teams in Edge: Edge itself crashes.
    • Teams in Firefox on the same PC: works without any problem.

    What we have tried

    • Disabled GPU acceleration — no change.
    • Cleared the Teams cache — no change.
    • Reinstalled Teams — this resolves it, but only until Teams updates itself. After the update the freeze is back.
    • Removed the M365 account from Teams and from Windows (Settings > Accounts > Access work or school) — works again until the contact list has fully loaded, then it freezes.

    Possible clue

The Edge/Firefox split may be the most useful signal here: the Teams desktop client and Edge both render through Chromium/WebView2, while Firefox uses Gecko. That points to the Chromium rendering path rather than to the account or the service side. The fact that it only triggers once contacts are fully loaded also suggests something in the contact data itself (categories?) is hitting the bug, which lines up with the earlier comment in this thread.
