Switch between private and corporate accounts in Teams - on MacBook

My Teams gets stuck in either my corporate account or private account. I am using them on my MacBook and iPhone from time to time. No particular preference for accounts and devices, eg don't just use personal account on phone, etc.

The initial page when I join Teams shows both accounts, but after I choose one, I can't get out to the other. Why is this so difficult?

    Hi @Stewart Bruderlin

From your description, the issue is specifically with switching between the personal and work accounts in the Teams app on your Mac, since both accounts are initially recognized but Teams becomes stuck on whichever account you select.

To narrow this down, please provide more information:

    • After you select one account, when you click your profile picture, is the other account still listed but unavailable, or does it disappear completely?
    • Does the same issue occur on your iPhone or only on the MacBook?
    • What Teams version and build are you using on the Mac?
    • What macOS version is installed on your MacBook?
    • Did this issue start after a Teams update or a macOS update? If so, do you know which update was installed around the time the issue started?

I suggest some steps you may try:

1.Remove both accounts and add them again

Since Teams initially recognizes both accounts, try removing both accounts from Teams and adding them again.

    • Open Teams and select your profile picture.
    • Remove both the personal and work accounts from Teams.
    • Completely quit Teams.
    • Reopen Teams and sign in with the work account first.
    • Add the personal account again.
    • Test whether you can switch between the two accounts from the profile menu.

    2.Clear the Teams cache

If the issue persists, completely quit Teams and clear the Teams cache, then restart the Mac, open Teams, sign in again, and test account switching.

3.Start the Mac in Safe Mode and test Teams.

If account switching works normally in Safe Mode, this could indicate interference from a third-party application, login item, extension, or other software loaded during a normal startup.

4.Create a temporary new macOS user profile and test Teams using the same two accounts.

If switching works normally in the new profile, the issue is likely related to the original macOS user profile or its local Teams/credential data. If the same issue occurs there, it will point more toward the Teams client or account configuration.

Please try these suggestions and let me know how it goes.

Teams supports adding multiple accounts and switching between them, but the switch points differ by app and platform.

    On MacBook in Teams desktop:

    1. Select the profile picture.
    2. Select Add another account if the other account is not already added.
    3. To switch, select the profile picture again and choose the other account.

    On iPhone in Teams:

    1. Open the Teams app.
    2. Tap the profile picture or More.
    3. Tap Add account if needed, then sign in.
    4. Under Accounts and Orgs, select the account to switch to.
    5. A quick switch is also available by swiping up or down on the profile picture.

If Teams is staying on one account after sign-in, that is consistent with how the app works: after entering an account, switching is done from the profile/account menu rather than returning to the initial sign-in chooser.

For work accounts, Teams also supports switching organizations from the profile area, and notification behavior can be managed in Settings and more > Settings > Accounts and orgs.

If the issue is specifically that sign-in fails or the app will not let the work account complete sign-in, that can indicate a problem with the organization’s Microsoft 365 account or domain, and the IT admin should check it.
