The safest way to prevent an app from launching at startup is to go through the app's settings and turn off the setting that tells the app to launch. This is best because you are using the app's own settings.

The next safest way is to open Task Manager and turn to the "Startup apps" tab. There you can disable an app from launching at startup. This is not as safe as the first method, because you are actually interfering with the app's normal functioning. However, you're using a Windows control, which will be conservative.

The riskiest method is to use a third-party app.

To stop too many apps from opening at startup in Windows, use either Settings or Task Manager.

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Go to Apps > Startup.
    3. For each app in the list:
      • Turn On to let it start automatically when signing in.
      • Turn Off to stop it from starting automatically.
    4. If needed, select the app’s chevron to change advanced settings.

    Or use Task Manager:

    1. Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
    2. Select the Startup apps tab.
    3. Select the app to change.
    4. Choose:
      • Disable to stop it from starting automatically
      • Enable to allow it to start automatically

Task Manager also shows startup impact, which helps identify apps slowing startup:

    • Low Impact
    • Medium Impact
    • High Impact

If an app is not listed in Startup, it may need to be configured through File Explorer.

For deeper troubleshooting, Autoruns can show more auto-start locations such as logon entries, services, scheduled startup-related items, and registry-based auto-start entries. Disabling the wrong entry can affect app behavior, so use it carefully.
