Excel Copilot Hamburger Menu Shows "Menu unavailable" – Copilot Works, History Doesn't

Is the Copilot history menu currently disabled by Microsoft for some users, or is this a known bug?

Excel Version 2607 (Build 20228.20124), Current Channel.

Copilot works normally and I can start new chats.

However, clicking the hamburger menu (☰) in the upper-left corner of the Copilot pane displays "Menu unavailable."

The history menu worked a few weeks ago but no longer does. It still works in Word.

Troubleshooting already completed:

  • Signed out and back into Microsoft 365
  • Verified Microsoft 365 subscription is active
  • Repaired Microsoft 365 (Online Repair)
  • Restarted Windows
  • Account authentication errors resolved
  • Microsoft Support had remote access for approximately two hours and could not resolve the issue.

Is anyone else seeing this on Version 2607 Build 20228.20124?

    Hi Deborah Andrews,

I can understand how frustrating this is, especially since the history menu was working previously and the rest of Copilot continues to function normally.

Microsoft notes that access to Copilot conversation history in Excel is still being rolled out for commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot subscriptions. However, since the menu was previously available to you and still works in Word, the “Menu unavailable” message may be limited to the Excel experience rather than an issue with your subscription or Copilot access overall. For more information, please visit Frequently asked questions about Copilot in Excel

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators, contributors including external Microsoft employees cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back-end systems. My role is limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues, requests, or ideas.

In the meantime, please check File > Account > Update Options > Update Now to make sure the latest Current Channel update is installed. You can also test Copilot in Excel for the web and in a new workbook to determine whether the problem is specific to the desktop build or a particular file.

Since you have already completed an Online Repair and worked with Microsoft Support, I would not recommend repeating those steps. If the issue continues, please submit feedback from Excel through Help > Feedback > Report a problem, and include the exact build number, a screenshot of “Menu unavailable,” and the fact that conversation history still works in Word. This information can help the Excel and Copilot teams investigate the app-specific behavior. Thank you so much for your understanding.
