MS Teams Windows 10 - Can't Remove Cancelled Org

Running Windows 10 and the latest version of MS Team and Office 365.

I have a stubborn org that I can't delete from the Accounts and Orgs screen. This goes back several years and I assume the parent organisation WSP cancelled my account long ago, but I didn't log out or something. Now I can't get rid of WSP O365.

Screen shot below.

Note that the button is greyed out and I can't access the old org WSP O365 to delete it.

Any advice on how to proceed to remove WSP O365?

Based on the information you have provided, looks like you cannot delete your account. This could be because you are a guest user or a member of an organization.

In this case, please try these steps below:

1.Please go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/ > Organizations and check if any organizations listed there. If yes, click Leave.

In the Home organization section, there's no link to Leave your organization. Only an administrator can remove your account from your home organization.

For the external organizations listed under other organizations you collaborate with, you might not be able to leave on your own, for example when:

the organization you want to leave doesn’t allow users to leave by themselves
your account has been disabled

2.Disconnect work/school accounts:

Open Settings from the Start menu.
Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
Select any listed accounts and click Disconnect.

In these cases, you can select Leave, but then you'll see a message saying you need to contact the admin or privacy contact for that organization to ask them to remove you.

Sorry but none of the above ideas help. I want to remove a dead link to an external organisation in MS Teams. I don't want to disconnect any accounts.

The organisation that I want to remove from MS Teams does not show up in "My Account - Organisations". It only appears in MS Teams Account and Orgs. See the screen shot in the original question.

Thank you for the additional information. Since the organization does not appear in My Account > Organizations and the option to remove it in Teams is unavailable, the next step is to determine whether the entry is being retained by local Teams or Windows profile data.

Could you please try the following steps?

Fully sign out of Microsoft Teams and clear the Teams cache.

Go to Settings > Apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options, then select Repair. If the issue persists, select Reset.

Sign back in and check whether the old organization still appears under Accounts and orgs.

If the issue remains, create a new Windows user profile, sign in to Teams with the same account, and verify whether the stale organization is still displayed. For detailed guidance, you can refer to Microsoft’s official support article: Manage User Accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support

Hi Jade,

I cleared the MS Teams cache and deleted all folders under the %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe. Then I reset MS Teams in Microsoft Apps.

The stale organisation remains. It's only visible in MS Teams, nowhere else.

I checked in Windows 10 Settings>Accounts>Email & accounts and see two items in "Accounts used by other apps" See below.

My personal Microsoft account is [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]. The other account is a personal business account. Its only use is to provide a business email address via Outlook 365. It is a Microsoft Exchange account hosted by GoDaddy. I am it's only user. I need to keep the [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] email address active and not lose any emails. Is this account necessary in MS Accounts? Should I remove it? I can access the [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] account no problems by clicking the link and then the "Manage" button.

Could you please check whether the old organization is also visible when you sign in to Teams on the web?

If the old organization does not appear in Teams on the web, this would suggest the issue is limited to the Teams desktop client. In that case, please try:

1.Clear Credentials:

Open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager

Go to Windows Credentials

Under Generic Credentials, find and delete any entries related to MicrosoftAccount=User, Teams, or Office.

Sign out and sign back in again

2.Then completely uninstalling and reinstalling Teams.

3.Create a new Windows user profile, sign in to Teams with the same account, and verify whether the stale organization is still displayed. For detailed guidance, you can refer to Microsoft’s official support article: Manage User Accounts in Windows - Microsoft Support

If the old organization also appears in Teams on the web, this would indicate that the association is tied to your account rather than the local Teams installation. In that scenario, you will likely need to contact the former organization and ask them to permanently remove your account from their Microsoft 365 tenant, as the organization membership may still exist on the service side.

The stale org does appear when I sign into Teams via the web. I could sign in to the stale org via web teams, which I can't do via the desktop client. I signed in and there is a "Leave org" button. Clicked that and it took me to sign in of my frostwaterconsulting account. The stale org does not show up there. Closed teams, then re-opened, but stale org still appears. Looks like I have to contact the external organisation and have them remove my account from their Microsoft 365 tenant...is that correct?

What are the pros and cons of Teams on the web versus the desktop app. I have both available and want to use the most efficient option.

Thank you for testing that and providing the results.

Based on what you've described, it does appear that the old organization association still exists on the service side rather than being a Teams desktop client issue. Since the stale organization is visible in Teams on the web and remains present even after selecting Leave org, there is very little that can be removed locally on your device.

At this point, the most likely resolution is to contact the former organization and ask them to permanently remove your account from their Microsoft 365 tenant.

Regarding Teams on the web vs. the desktop app:

1.Teams desktop app

Generally provides the best overall experience and performance for daily use.

Better integration with Windows, notifications, Outlook, file associations, and device features.

Supports offline functionality for some scenarios.

2.Teams on the web

No installation required and can be accessed from any device.

Useful for troubleshooting to determine whether an issue is client-side or account-side.

May have slightly fewer integrations and can rely more heavily on browser performance.
