We plan to purchase Windows GGWA (Get Genuine Windows Agreement) licenses to legalize computers that previously ran non-genuine Windows.

Please clarify Microsoft's official licensing position:

Does purchasing and assigning a GGWA license only make the device compliant from the date the license is assigned, or does it also remediate/waive any previous period of unlicensed use?

If this is documented, please provide the applicable Microsoft Product Terms, Licensing Brief, or other official document. #office365, #GGWA

Hi Thanh,

The short answer is no. GGWA makes the device compliant from the date the license is acquired and assigned, but it does not retroactively waive or erase prior unlicensed use. Microsoft positions GGWA as a legalization solution that provides a valid Windows license for existing non-genuine devices going forward, not as an amnesty program.

The GGWA Supplemental Agreement states that customers can acquire licenses for existing desktops that require proper licenses, but it does not include any language forgiving historical non-compliance.

Therefore, the safest licensing interpretation is: GGWA legalizes the device prospectively only; any consideration of past unlicensed use would require a separate written agreement or audit settlement from Microsoft.

Harry.
