Azure for Students Verification Failing: GitHub Student Pack Ineligible & School Lookup API Empty

Hello,

I am attempting to activate my Azure for Students benefit, but I am repeatedly blocked by verification errors despite being an active student and an approved GitHub Student Developer Pack recipient.

Here are the specific issues encountered:

  1. GitHub Authentication Error: When attempting to verify using "Sign in with GitHub", the portal returns an "Ineligible" error, even though my GitHub account has an active, verified GitHub Student Developer Pack.
  2. API / School Lookup Failure: When trying to verify manually by entering my university details (Adama Science and Technology University), the school name auto-complete dropdown fails to populate. Inspecting the browser Network tab shows the backend API endpoint (get schools by country) returning an empty response array [], making manual selection impossible.
  3. Domain Tenant Type: My institutional email is an active educational email issued by my university. However, because it operates under an organizational domain/alias tenant structure, standard account alias linking to a personal account is blocked by Entra tenant rules.

Since I am an active student with verified GitHub Student Pack status, I would appreciate assistance in manually verifying my account or resolving this subscription sign-up block.

Thank you!

Cypert Bon hi & thx for sharing urs issue here at Q&A portal,

sounds like two separate issues that unfortunately converge on the same result. The GitHub Student Developer Pack isn't the source of truth for Azure for Students eligibility. Even if GitHub recognizes your student status, Azure performs its own eligibility checks, so having an active GitHub Student Pack doesn't guarantee that the Azure for Students offer can be activated. The school lookup returning an empty list is more concerning. If the API is returning [ ] for your country or institution, that points to a problem with the education verification service or its data, rather than your browser or account. If your university can't be selected, you won't be able to complete manual verification.

At this point, I'd open an Azure for Students support request and include

The exact UTC timestamp of the failed verification. Your university name (Adama Science and Technology University).

The country you selected. Screenshots of the "Ineligible" message.

The browser network trace showing the school lookup API returning an empty array. Microsoft can verify whether your institution is present in the education verification database and whether your account is being incorrectly rejected. There isn't a customer-side workaround if the verification service itself isn't returning any schools.

    rgds,

    Alex
