I cannot enter data into my Excel cells. The worksheet is unprotected, and I can shade a cell but can suddenly not enter data. What can I do?

    I've seen this happen when Excel accidentally enters Edit mode or when the workbook has some hidden restrictions. If the sheet is definitely unprotected, try opening the file in a new workbook or start Excel in Safe Mode to rule out an add-in issue. Also, does this happen with every Excel file or just this one? That will help narrow it down.

    1. Also Please share a few more details so we can better understand the issue:
      • Which version of Excel are you using? (For example, 16.111.1)
      • What type of Microsoft Office license do you have? (Microsoft 365, Office 2019, etc.)
      • Which version of macOS are you using?
    2. Depending on your setup, the problem may be related to:
      • A certificate that expired on July 13, which cannot be renewed on macOS versions older than Monterey.
      • An issue affecting Office 2019 licenses.

    Thanks, good hint Re:Protected.

    Click Review > Unprotect Sheet. If prompted, enter the sheet password.

    Check whether the workbook is opened as Read Only by clicking File > Get Info and ensuring Locked is not selected.

    Start Excel in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key while opening Excel, then test if you can type in a new workbook.

    Hi,

    I'm going to run through a few steps with you. Some of these are diagnostic — they help me narrow down what's wrong, not fix it outright. So if nothing changes after a step, that's normal and expected, not a dead end. I'll keep going until we've got this resolved.

    1. Does the issue persist if you try a new workbook?
    2. Are you on Mac or Windows?
    3. Double-click a cell or press F2. Try typing. If that works, press Enter to confirm the entry
    4. Press Win + Ctrl + O. Click ScrLk to turn it off.
    5. Press Ctrl + 1 > Protection tab. Ensure Locked is not causing issues if sheet protection was recently changed.
    6. Open File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, select COM Add-ins > Go. Uncheck all add-ins, restart Excel, and test again.
